Some time ago there was a bit of a discussion on connecting embedded gear to ethernet and
the difficulties to keep up with the fast transmission levels especially when part of
larger systems.
Even keeping up with the broadcast messages in a thousand machine environment will keep a small processor pretty busy.
This site gives a nice overview of the state of the market for anybody going that way.
