RS232 Communication + USB Power Through USB? - jmey...@emittechnologies.com - Dec 11 12:05:32 2008

Hello,

I have a device that uses 3-wire(TX,RX,GND) communication. It needs 5V and about 75mA power to operate. I'd like to be able to power this thing through a PC USB port and be able to communicate with it through HyperTerminal. I know there's probley going to need to be driver on the PC side. Has anyone accomplished this before? What all is required?

Thank you.

Look at FTDI's USB chip set... probably the FT232 series. You will
also find very detailed application notes - look in there for the
reference schematic for what they call the "bus powered
design." This will do exactly what you want.

You can also download their free VCP (virtual comm port)
software. This USB driver will allow programs like Hyperterm to see
the USB-connected device as a standard RS-232 serial port on your PC.

THERE IS A VIRTUAL SERIAL PORT OVER USB WHICH IS DESCRIBED IN
FREESCALE'S DEMOQE128 USERS MANUAL.

Dave,

Where could I find drivers for DEMOQE128 virtual serial port, so that I
could access this virtual COM port for example from HyperTermianal? P&E
drivers allow to use this port only from their terminal program. Thanks.

BTW QE128 sounds like oftopic for 68HC12 group.

Edward

I haven't got to test it out, but you can get the virtual COM port application here:

I don't like P&E teminal application for DEMOQE128. And since DEMOQE128
toolkit doesn't really provide ___virtual COM port driver___, I have to use
USB-COM converter.
