CAN bus using HC11/12 - Please help - techybc - Jul 21 15:06:00 2004

Has anyone used the CAN bus module on the HC11/12? Or know of any
demo software available to test the bus using the HC11/12.

I am trying to learn about the CAN bus/control area networks and I
wanted to create a setup such as this:

PC (via USB or Serial)<----CAN BUS---->HC11/12 micro(CAN
module/transceiver).

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've posted some sample code for the HC12 to this group before,
you can search for it or send me an email directly. Note that the
HC11 didn't support a built in CAN bus controller, only the HC12.
Also, one word of advice for first time CAN projects, save yourself
a zillion headaches by starting with a known working CAN node,
either a microcontroller or a PC interface.

Right On!
Zanthic's USB/CAN pod comes with test code that lets
you output known CAN messages to your test system
from the PC. So you know that at least one end is working.

RE: CAN bus using HC11/12 - Please help - Kerry Berland - Jul 22 8:27:00 2004

For the 68HC11, you would need to interface an external CAN controller, as
others have pointed out.
So a 68HC12 series part might be more practical. One practical method would
be to purchase a Freescale demo board for a 68HC12 chip, and also an
off-the-shelf PC-to-CAN converter box. For this latter you might want to
take a look at www.zanthic.com <http://www.zanthic.com/> .
Best regards,

Kerry,

Would you be able to recommend a demo board? I have been searching
the freescale website but I haven't come across a suitable demo board.

Thanks.

Ally

Re: Re: CAN bus using HC11/12 - Please help - Sydney Faria - Jul 24 8:03:00 2004

I am on last stage of a project where we used the mc68hc912d60a development
board from Axiom. In this project I have used every module of the D60A
microcontroller and had to write an msCAN implementation from scratch. We
also needed a good deal on eeprom and flash. I would give a very good
rating for this development board. Since we got the software into version
1.0 we procured 50 more of these boards and used them for the final project
and have been very pleased with the results, although, if size had been the
most important factor then we would have had to make up a PC board to suit.
When I wrote the CAN protocol I made extensive use of 3 books and the
Motorola documentation, as well as the CANcia site (and port.de). We also
bought IXXAT's CAN bus interfaces: tinCAN and USB CAN monitors and used the
freebie minimon that comes with each of these. The tinCAN goes for about
$895 while the USB interfaces go for about $235 and they worked with the
minimon to our satisfaction.
As far as using one of the 'standard' protocols seen advertised we could not
use any of them since I had to write the whole project in HS12 assembly and
needed to make use of every one of the other modules in this
microcontroller. We could have used ICC or Metrowerks since we had them,
but the decision was handed down to use assebly only. Looking back now I
really do not regret doing everything in assembly, and with all the asm{...}
stuff I would have had to use I would not have saved much, if any, time at
all.

If you have more questions on how I did the code and other details I will be
happy to converse directly. Sydney/PWA
