STK 500 - channel_robo - Apr 23 4:53:00 2005

Hi!
Will someone recommend STK 500 for a beginner? I read somewhere on
the net that Atmel has stopped this product. Will it be a good buy?
And how about ISP? The price difference make me think of ISP. Any
comment?

Regards,

I believe there is a "copy" STK 500 made by someone else. From Eric

AW: [AVR club] STK 500 - Klaus Ruebsam - Apr 23 7:38:00 2005

ISP: In System Programming

STK500: I first started with a STK200 that had to be programmed with the
ISP-Adapter for parallel-port. I switched over to STK500 and like the
fact that I do not have to jungle around with the cables + the STK500 is
very flexible in terms of oscillator and portusage. If you are heading
just for one single application I would more recommend to start with a
first application design that makes usage of the ISP-possibilities the
AVRs come with and keep programming your board using ISP over either
serial (which is now also available or the old fashioned parallelway
(using a 74LS244 (or was it 245) driver).

Regards,

Klaus

I have not heard anything about the STK500 production being stopped.
Then again I sure don't know everything.

Keeping that last sentence in mind...
About 4 years go I started with the STK500. Yes, you can get cheaper
starter boards and prototype boards but...
When you factor in with some of those boards only one type of
microcontroller can be used. Also, to make that micro and board
usefull you may have to add input devices, switches, and output
indicators, LEDs. Plus the STK500 gives you off-board access to all
the pins of the micro you are experimenting with.

It will probably be sometime before Atmel quits manufacturing DIPs.
Even when they do for sometime the old out of date guys will still be
available.

For Atmel's 2/22/05 answer to
"Are there any starter kits available for AVR?"

and the fact they are USELESS without a 500, means they will sell for a
while longer (at least until they make a replacement)

Kat.

AVR's I got an STK-500. It took a little bit of learning but I'm very
pleased with it. It's a great deal. Very versatile.

I think I've mentioned this before, but the only drawback to it that I see
is it doesn't use ZIF sockets. I might just try to replace the sockets I
use most on mine with ZIF sockets, or make some sort of adapter.

Anyone who waants to "roll their own" JTAG adapter can find some board
patterns at this site:

http://www.ve1alq.com/downloads/pll/jtag.htm

I've been using this to program Altera CPLD's but it should work with any
JTAG.

I haven't tried this but I believe you should be able to plug ZIF
sockets into the associated DIP socket. One or two cautions: Other
components on the STK500 may interfer or one ZIF may interfer with
another ZIF.

Depends on the ZIF. Some have pins that are large, or turned 90 degrees.

I just use an amp double-wipe plugged into the board's socket.
This "sacrificial socket" wears out fast, but the one on the board
gets only a few cycles on it.
