Get a book and read it,
AVR An introductory course by John Morton, it starts from the very begining, then you can move on either with practice and datasheets or advaced books,

Which micrcontroller do you feel interested in?

Since you are a beginner in this field,so to begin with,i recommend
you to learn 8051.
Get a book by Dogram Ibrahim and Mazidi (C version i do not recommend
assembly at the beginning to keep things simple for you).
Also get Proteus VSM software,i particularly like book by Dogan
Ibrahim,it's very simple and is equipped with examples in C,you can
simulate some of those circuits in Proteus VSM.

You would also need Keil microVision compiler

I had pdf version of book by Dogan Ibrahim,i would try to search it out for....

MCS-51 is =A0easy to understand the microcontroller specially for bingers b=
ecause it is bit addressable. But it is not reliable for industrial applica=

[AVR club] Re: New in the field of magic chip - brewski922 - Nov 2 2:33:52 2009

My opinion is the AVR micros from Atmel are the best. There is more support for the PIC but AVR is well supported and a better chip. Another plus for the AVR is the 'AVR Studio' available from Atmel is free. There is also a free C development platform call WinAVR, pronounced 'whenever', for the Windows OS. It is a GNU GCC C platform. There is also one for Linus and Apple OS but they are not very easy to setup. Oh, the AVR Studio is an assembly platform but can also support the interface to C platforms also.

For good independent info and help on AVR check out AVR Freaks at
http://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=index

This will take you to the Forum selection page. The top forum is 'AVR forum'. Like it says 'A general AVR 8-bit forum'. There is also a 'Tutorial' forum. To do much on here you need to be a registered user, which is free.

There is the Atmel homepage
www.atmel.com

and then there is the homepage for the AVR 8-bit micros
http://www.atmel.com/products/avr/default.asp

If you decide to go with AVR 8-bit a good starter board would be the STK500, about $80. It interfaces to a PC via a RS232 port. If you computer only has USB you should be able to get a USB to RS232 adapter for $10 to $20. Lots of folks talking about making your own interface/programming board. That is a nice and noble attempt but there are so many things that have to be just right, both hardware, software, interface, etc., you will probably give up. The STK500 has 8 pushbuttons for input and 8 LEDs for output, a second RS232 port so the micro you are programming can send custom text back the a PC.

Oh yes, there is also CodeVisionAVR, cvAVR, which is a C platform with a free evaluation version. It has a CodeWizard that you can tell what chip you are using, what megahertz oscillator, the input and output ports, what interrupts and many other things and it will start your initial code by programming these into the software. That is to say, it can tell the chip these pins are input and theses are output. Of course you have to code what is to be done with the input and what sends something to the output.

That brings to BOOKS
The definitive book on AVR is
'Embedded C Programming and the Atmel AVR'
http://www.amazon.com/Embedded-C-Programming-Atmel-AVR/dp/1418039594/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

It is pricey @ about $87 from Amazon but it was written as a college teaching book on the AVR. You probably know how college text books are priced. But this one is worth every dollar. You don't need it to get start, the folks at AVR Freaks can point you in the right directions when you need help.

Another platform is the AVR Butterfly, $20. And a good place to start, he has a good book on AVR Butterfly too
http://www.smileymicros.com/?&MMN_position=9:9

Smiley Micros also has the Arduino kit at $80
http://www.smileymicros.com/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=67&MMN_position=114:114
This may be the best way for someone to get started with AVR. A little more that the Butterfly but much more versatile.

aoa

my dear i suggest you that you should start micro controller by the book "8051 Microcontrollers by M. Ali Mazadi" and start reading that book from 7th cahpter and then Onward.... if your will read from start you will confused... but you must read chapter 0 in the bagning....

on more thing if you are good in digital circuit designing you can do big projects after reading this book otherwise take some time to clear your Digital Circuit Design Basics.... try visit "LOGIC INN TECHNICAL ACADEMY" which is located at abdullahpur Faisalabad...... you will find a proper guideline and directions...

Re: [AVR club] New in the field of magic chip - Zack Widup - Nov 2 15:04:32 2009

For a general understanding of microcontrollers, one of the best books I've
found is "Introduction to Microcomputers Vol. 1 - Basic Concepts" by Adam
Osborne. There are apparently a few copies available on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Microcomputers-Basic-Concepts-v/dp/0079310346/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257191825&sr=1-1

He treats the subject in very general terms, not emphasizing any processor
type, with the most basic data that someone needs to grasp. After that, it's
just a matter of finding the data for the device you want to use and
learning its nuances, structure and language.
