Talking to etrex - GPS - David and Megan - Aug 10 12:26:00 2002

Hi guys,

I have just bought an etrex Vista (GPS receiver) and am also very keen to start talking to it via my BX24.

I have no idea how to do this just yet. Are there any good websites/books that explain serial comms and/or NMEA?

How much information can you tap out of the GPS. I was hoping to be able to extract position, speed, heading, time/distance to next waypoint, altitude etc after the etrex calculated this for me. However, I have a strong suspicion that I will have to calculate these myself.

Any help on both serial comms and NMEA would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave.

Did you read before you wrote?

Google can point you to help understand RS232 serial communication.

All that is publicly known about GPS, NMEA, WAAS and more is at
http://joe.mehaffey.com/. You'll find NMEA FAQs there. Joe works for
Garmin; although he is not a spokesman, you can trust that what he
offers is accurate.

For BX-24 software to read NMEA, go to

of messages. Tom Becker

Thanks Tom,

Yes, I did read the previous messages, they are what prompted me to post.
I guess I was just being a bit lazy hoping someone out there would have the
answers at there finger tips.
I should have done some research before I posted as the info is sure to be
out there, but I just got excited when I saw the previous posts.

Thanks for the link to Joes site, I will go over it in detail shortly.

Dave.
