Error halting - then EEPROM download error - enriquei2001 - Jun 3 10:44:00 2004

I am using winXP and com port 3. I get Error code 217
and Unable to halt messages when I try to download a simple LED
program...but for some reason every now and then I get EEPROM
download error -
*** Opening file: C:\Program Files\BasicX\Project1.bxb

*** Downloading File

Writing internal EEPROM
Write failed
Writing external EEPROM
Verifying external EEPROM
Verify failed, retrying
Verify failed

*** Download Error
-----------------------------------------------------

Error writing to internal EEPROM

Error verifying external EEPROM:
Serial input timed out

----------------------------------------------------- The board is good and I've tried 3 different BX24's !!
Let me know if anyone else has had this problem...any ideas or
solutions??? Enrique ---

I too have had this on occasion.

Several times I got around it by adding an earth ground, but they say that
is not necessary.

I have one board that will give me this error regularly. I put a scope on
it to see if there was a problem on the input and it would never fail with
the scope probe hooked onto the resistor from the DB9 pin to the 74HC04.

I don't know what is going on, but the chips are not faulty because they
work just fine in other boards.

Make sure that your pin 5 is well grounded.

Sorry I can't be more help but I really don't know a definite cause.

Re: Error halting - then EEPROM download error - Jeffrey Rocchio - Jun 26 17:25:00 2004

Had this exact problem. Whet away completely as soon as I made sure
that the common ground of the BX24 board (I'm using a breadboard right
now) was tied to the ground system of the PC (via the RS-232 ground
pin). You have to have a common reference ground between the two
systems or else what they consider to be "+5V" gets ambigiious (RS-232
should be +/- 12v, but the BX24 is running it on a 5v system, so it's
going to be sensitive to this).

BX24 pin 4 HAS to be grounded to both the PC's ground (via RS-232 pin
#5) AND your common ground from the BX24 power supply. --jeff r--
