I have only USB, no serial port, HELP - kanish89 - Dec 3 11:30:00 2004

Hi all
I use a laptop and it has only USB ports in it but no serial port. I
dont have a desktop computer. But the basicx uses only serial port to
communicate and so i didnt know what to do. So i searched the net and
i saw a product that has a USB on one side and a serial port on the
other side and it also says that it converts the USB connection to a
serial port connection. But will the Basicx downloader be able to
detect that USB is the serial port. And will it transfer the program
through the USB because in the downloader it says only Com1 or Com2
or Com3 as the connection. So can anybody help me in this situation.
And will the converter work with basicx and basicx downloader.

The USB to serial converters work just fine with a small exception. One day it may read as COM1. The next day it could read COM3 or COM2. As soon as you figure out which it is, then you are set... until you reboot your laptop.

My laptop did have a preference for one particular COM port, but it was never 100%.

Re: I have only USB, no serial port, HELP - William Keith - Dec 4 11:11:00 2004

I use IOGear's GUC232A USB to RS232 adapter and it works well for me. I am
using them on an Alienware laptop and 2 IBM laptops with no problems. Once
it is set up on the laptop the comport that was selected remains the same.
On the Alien it ended up as Com5. I can't check the two IBM's as they are at
work but I believe they were both Com3.

I have used them with the BX-24, PICS, and also to direct connect with
Alerton's Controls. The Alerton controls are controlling multiple pieces of
HVAC equipment with many points to read and transfer. For these three
applications I have not had any problems.

Here is a link to IOGears page for this product.

Hope this helps you out!

Hi
Thank you guys for your response. I guess it works well and so, I think I am not going to have any problems with the converter. Thank you.
