BasicX for high-school students - David Sousa Mendes - May 8 6:41:13 2007
Hello mates
I'm a teacher at a technical high-school.
I'd like to develop some small basicX projects with my students
I'm looking for keypads, LCDs, and environmental (or other type) sensors to use in
classes
Which ones would you recomend considering the factor price and simplicity-of-use?
Regards
David M.

Hi David,
have you looked at Peter Anderson's site?
He teaches also, and sells parts and kits
for the BX-24, PicAxe and other processors.
I am a satisfied customer.

Hi David,
I think Robodyssey Systems (www.robodyssey.com) is a fantastic source
for all your BX-24 and robotics needs. They are geared toward
education, meaning they make it easy for folks to get going right out
of the box. The best example of this is their motherboard -- the RAMB
II (http://mivasecure.abac.com/bpatton/merchant.mvc?
Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RS&Category_Code=M). I see hundreds of posts
from this group wondering why they can't get their BX to run; I've used
about 50 of their motherboards in my classes and am completely
satisfied. (I've even launched one into space and it worked
perfectly.) The company is so good that wrote my textbook around their
products.
The LCD display they sell is the same one NetMedia recommends
(http://mivasecure.abac.com/bpatton/merchant.mvc?
Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RS&Category_Code=A) and is the one around which
I wrote my LCD tutorial:
http://www.basicxandrobotics.com/tutorials/LCD/index.html. They work
great.
As far as sensors are concerned, you can do a lot with a voltage
divider, photoresistors, and thermistors. Again, Robodyssey is the
place to go: Voltage Divider Boards (VBD) are $8 and their sensor pack
is $10 (both at http://mivasecure.abac.com/bpatton/merchant.mvc?
Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RS&Category_Code=S). If you are interested in
environment sensing with cheap sensors, check out my page
http://www.basicxandrobotics.com/apps/Environment%20Sensing%
20Station/index.html. This month's Servo Magazine has an article about
my Environment Sensing Station. I am almost finished with the
construction guide for the ESS, which will be linked from the above
site.
Hope this helps.

Hello guys
I'm in the process of deciding which servos to buy for my school applications...
Two questions:
1 - is the parallax servo Standard Servo (#900-00005) full compatible with the basicX24
SERVOS06 ?
2 - If positive, which of them would you recomend?
Cheers

The Parallax servo Full rotation is really a custom made Hitachi servo
that is compatible with all Hitachi servo output shafts.
Electronically, it will operate the same as the BasicX servos, but I am
not sure if BasicX wheels will attach.
Also, the Parallax servo included a 'centering screw' that eliminates
adjusting in software for proper 'stop position' of rotation.

have bought a huge quantity from Hitachi.

I would recommend either one - dependent on price.
But, they both fit the same hole in a chassis. The only things to
consider are whether you want to use BasicX wheels or Parallax wheels
AND if you prefer the adjustment screw to software coded adjustment.
Please note that once in place, the adjustment screw can be hard to
reach.
