Stepper motors - Nicholas Smith - Jun 23 3:56:00 2000

Can anyone help with this?.. I want to control two stepper motors from my
BX24 - I have no idea what the stepper motor model is, they are both the
tiny ones you get in 3.5" floppy drives. I'm guessing they will operate at
5v but may suck quite a bit of power. I want to use as little outputs from
the BX24 as possible.
...OR!.... Does anyone know of another tiny motor and gearbox that will do
the same job? Maybe those stepper motors are not the way to go. SMALL is the
keyword here.
I've looked at the StepU controller. (www.parallaxinc.com) but it is unclear
if this will do the job.
Cheers all.
Nik.

Realistically, you can't use the outputs of the BX-24 to drive a stepper
motor directly. You need to switch it through some kind of H-bridge or
controller.

If you want small gearmotors, check out www.micromo.com -- the smallest
they have is about 8mm in diameter. If you have lots of money, you can go
to www.smoovy.com, they sell gearmotors as small as 3 mm in diameter,
although only in two gear ratios (1:25 and 1:125).

Check out www.mpja.com, they have a very small (3/8" round, 3/8" long)
stepper motor for dirt cheap.

Later,
Jon

Re: Stepper motors - Tony Brenke - Jun 23 9:43:00 2000

I made a circut that uses 3 wires to run a stepper
motor.
And if you are looking to rune two then it only
requires 5 lines.
above two it is 2 more lines each.

the first is a single step type the second is a 1/2
step type.

on Monday I will upload them to the file site.
(dxf, dwg, and eagle files)

Check out the UCN5804B. It will drive 5 or 6 wire steppers known as unipolar
steppers. You provide it with a direction signal and a step pulse for each
step you want to take. That's 2 pins on the BX24 for each motor. Find it at
www.findchips.com
