I'm going to have a go at putting XSOC onto a little SpartanXL proto
board I designed a few months ago. Until now I've been using the
XCS05XL, which isn't big enough for XSOC, so I've just ordered an
XCS10XL. I didn't have any problems getting XSOC placed and routed for
the Spartan chip.

I'll also need to add an SRAM, VGA port and parallel port to my board.

Hi Leon, welcome. If I'm not mistaken, I remember you from
alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt in years past (before the PC clone folks overran
the group.) Thanks for giving XSOC a spin.

I have P&R'd XSOC/xr16 for SpartanXL (XCS10XL and XCS20XL) in the past, just
to see how it fared. To my surprise, the cheaper SpartanXL family was
considerably faster than XC4000XL:

I just had the (very surprising and pleasant) experience of switching PAR
from targeting an XC4005XL-3, which is ~$28 Q1, to an XCS10XL-4, ~15.85 Q1
(and supposedly $3 Q100K), and seeing my cycle time go down from ~43 ns to
~28 ns.

It seems too good to be true!

I suppose if you floorplan and so don't need the extra interconnect of the
4005XL (vs. the S10XL), the former is just bigger, fatter, slower, and more
expensive.

One downside of the SpartanXL parts is they are not offered in the same
variety of packages as the '4000XL. For example, there is no XCS20XL-PC84C.

Yes, it is I. I'm also playing about with Altera devices at home (a
colleague of mine spends all his time working on them for our current
project) so I might have a go later on at porting XSOC to that. The Altera
FLEX 10K I'm using is about twice as expensive as the equivalent Spartan
XCS10XL, unfortunately.

BTW, you've obviously heard of the ARC core. I've known Jez San, who runs
ARC, since he was a very spotty 14-year old. He used to belong to the TRS-80
users group I formed many years ago.

BTW, news just in from the IP2000 conference is that ARC just bought
VAutomation (misc. CPU & periph core IPs) and Spectrum Signal Processing
(DSP and net protocol know-how).

On the subject of 'porting', the availability of Verilog version of XSOC
adds to the (long) list of interesting things to do & possible follow-on
articles...

Schematics vs. Synthesis
Synthesizer 'A' vs. Synthesizer 'B'
FPGA 'A' vs. FPGA 'B'

As for the latter, also at IP2000 I met up with Actel who I'd kind of stuck
on the 'antifuse religious war' shelf long ago. But sounds like they
actually have some pretty neat parts, incl. Gatefield Flash-based FPGAs.
The 'fine-grained' chips are ostensibly a 'no-brainer' fit with ASIC/gate
array tool chains. Announced a deal where Mentor Graphics IPs are
specifically available for Actel chips.
