xr16 vs. nios - Jeff Chang - Jul 5 8:13:00 2002

Who has made performance comparison for them?

Jeff

I remember seeing something by Jan in his website's about NIOS but I don't
remember seeing anything in terms of comparison.

This then leads to a delicate issue of benchmarking.

Over the years, it has not gone un-noticed that compiler writers for CPU
companies have written their compilers to produce optimised code for
benchmarking knowing the benchmark code adhead of time. In more recent
years, many manufacturers show mulitple benchmarks, but as with all
marketing, they show what they want us to see!

This was certainly a problem when I worked with Transputers and was
heightend by the architechture having certain features favouring some
benchmarks. When it came to using it in a real application, it was way under
powered.

So, back to Jeff, rather than the simple "what bench mark would you use?", I
hope you see that this is a much deeper question, not only involving the
CPU, but also the tool chain, the benchamark code and any opitmisation that
may have been done in the CPU and the tools for specific benchmarks.

Veronica

Also you never see the SOURCE for the bewnchmarks too.
I know BYTE once did a bunch of benchmarks in small C
but I have not been able to find reference to them on
the web or source.

I remember that.
I think ".EXE" did one too around the same time because of doubt in
benchmarking in the PC arena. I'll ask the ex-editor - he works in the same
company I do.
