vmebus master softcore - reg - kannaiah badam - Jan 24 3:12:00 2005

Hello to all the fpga designers

we are planning to design Motorola Power PC8260 based
200 Mhz, cpu board on VME bus. we would like to use
vmebus master in a fpga. Earlier designs used VIC068,
CYPRESS. Now, we would like to switch to softcore. we
have searched the net and results are not
encouraging.please help us in locating or ready made
core or any work done previously and share your
experiences on ip core.

thanks in advance

BADAM KANNAIAH

Hi!

I know that caen is building VME boards with FPGA as the VME interface.
http://www.caen.it/nuclear/index.php
The probably developed their own core for this.

If you are not a direct competitor you can try to license the core from
them.
I found their manager very open and cooperative in the past. (And we are
a competitor ;-)

Google using "vhdl fpga vic068" turns out a company selling this IP.

whats's wrong with them ?

Search a little more...can't always trust the first/obvious hit. If you look
specifically for 'VME' on Reflex Consulting's website, there are no hits. That makes
the most recent mention mid-2003.

My guess it was a trial balloon and no one was interested.

OK, it is getting OT for this list anyway, but what is so tough on the
VMEbus protocol, that you can't write it on your own in few days/weeks
? Specially, as they used the VIC068 already and should have the
documentation ?

Hello emu_e_s

thanks for the info. We have implemented for slave
and boards are working fine. We would like use a
proven core, so that my project comes out faster. we
are ready to buy a proven ip and implement on our
board. We have studied about thundra vme bus
interface controller also. but would like to implement
in a fpga. we need to support for atleast 20 years for
our product. We prefer a proven, tested and used
ipcore in our board.

thanks
