Question regarding FPGA (is this good enough?) and also the software needed - asgf...@gmail.com - Oct 13 13:36:14 2006
I have previously worked on Spartan IIE boards while at Uni and am now wanting to continue
tinkering with them at home to improve my skills. I came across the Spartan 3E Starter
board at the Xilinx site for USD150 and am thinking of purchasing it.
I intend to start off with some verilog to get me going again (basic stuff) and then I
intend to eventually add a PicoBlaze or MicroBlaze or some stuff from OpenCores and maybe
put on some embedded Linux.
I have the following questions:
Hardware:
- Is the FPGA and the board good enough, size/feature wise; will it let me learn to the
extent describe above?
- Where do I get the board in UK? (Xilinx has something about shipping to EU and the
listed UK distributor\'s site isn\'t loading right now - possibly something fishy with my
network)
Software:
- Am I correct in saying the Webpack from Xilinx limits the simulation capabilities but
not the ability to use the FPGA\'s full capacity (if required)?
- Will I need the EDK for the MicroBlaze or PicoBlaze or OpenCore stuff or loading some
embedded Linux? If not what tools will I need?
I\'m prepared to spend about 200USD and no more, unless there is good reason. Thanks in
Advance.

Yes. It's a great board.

Can't help you there, sorry.

Yes. Webpack provides full development features for all FPGAs up to
a certain size. It does include the one on the S3E starter kit board,
as well as some larger ones.
There are some limits on the simulator. I haven't explored that.

You need the EDK if you want to use MicroBlaze. You don't need it
for PicoBlaze or OpenCores.
