Given that a few participants here have brought up the topic of
stepper motor control, I thought I'd offer a bit of info that I
personally (as a stepper-motor 'newbie') found very useful.

It contains a excellent tutorial on the subject, with interesting
animated graphics, and even goes into some of the more "theoretical"
and analytic aspects for those so inclined.
