I highly suggest taking a look at Amateur Radio's Packet Radio Protocol. You can find these manuals online (ebay) for about US$5.00. There seems to be a baud-rate barrier of only about 12.5Kbps, although I have seen them as high as 56kbps, it would be nice if this could be extended to at least 1Mbps. Yes, I realize that I am not properly exchanging data rates and baud-rates, but you get the point. There is more to it than just plug in a 1Mbps data tranceiver chip and let it go! There are bandwidth restrictions that must be abid by, however, if you could simultaneously transmit on say 10 different channels, which is "legal" in terms of the FCC, at 56Kbps, then you would theoretically move your transfer rate up to 560Kbps. Furthermore, If you could multiplex, or compress the data, then your effective data transfer rate could increase two-fold. This is just something that I am considering for a long-range communications system for a project of mine
(http://www.veryfinephotos.com/electronics/aerobot.htm). Sounds interesting, and if you e-mail me personally, then perhaps we can work together on this.

Take care.
