68HC711K4 newbie needs help - Mike Phillips - Aug 11 14:00:47 2006

Hi all,

I'm in tough situation and need your help. There was an electric
vehicle company called US Electricar that went out of business years
ago and left us owners to struggle to make our own repairs. I've done
ok figuring out the main board without schematics. But now we are
running into uP's that are getting damaged from a hardware issue.
120vac gets shorted and the inner layer board traces get damaged. So
once in a while the hc711 gets damaged. I've got a guy back east
helping, but everytime I need something we have to ship the uP's back
and forth. It's very slow going.

I have found a couple of eval board vendors. Since this is a PLCC 84
OTP uP, most of the vendors don't go this large. The help I need is
what hardware and software can I purchase for putting the S19 file
into my new batch of processors? I'm not a code guy. So this is not
for programming. The only extra thing besides burning the uP is I
sometimes need to change some of the constants back after changing
them thru the vehicles rs232 port via a DOS app. If a constant is
changed too far from nominal the vehicle won't boot and then the
constants cannot be changed. The guy back east figured this out, but
I'm not getting his help.

I just buzzed out a 20 pin connector on the main board that ties
directly to the 68hc711. I connects to +, - and 8 I/O lines. I wonder
if it could be programmed thru there? You tell me :)

I have my truck running again. But I have 3 other peoples boards that
still need repair.

I hope what I've said makes sense.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

What a pickle. You have my sympathy.

Insufficient information. You need to tell us the pin numbers. Pin 1
is the one in the middle of one side, with a dimple next to it. The
pins start from there, and are numbered counterclockwise when viewing
the chip from the top. Tell us the pin numbers and you can get some
help.

Why can't you do for them what you did for yourself?

Unfortunately, it does.

You have found the bank of Larn.
I can explain it for you, but I can't understand it for you.
I speak only for myself, and I am unanimous in that!

Below are the pinouts for the connector and the hc711.

Because their boards have smoke processors.

Hmm. Where are you going to get a [legal] copy of the firmware?

Since the procs on the boards are toast, anyway, you
are going to have to install new ones. Why not program
the new ones before putting them onto the boards?

[snip pins]

I don't even know who we'd ask as they are out of business. One of the
fellows in our group pulled the code out and now we have it to replace
dead uP's.

I have purchased new uP's. THe fellow on the east coast can burn them
for me. The problem is that it takes forever to get them to me. So I
wanted to do it myself. I've burned lots of Atmel parts so I have a
clue. Just not the skill and hardware to do an HC711. I'm hoping you
can point me to the software and a schematic so I can make this repair
operation self sufficent. I do everything so far for free. We just
want to keep our vehicles running.
