USB mass storage device class questions - "Ing.Antonio Morra" - Jul 25 2:51:03 2008
Browsing about the micrium products, I see that they have a USB stack
package and an embedded micro file system as well.
Iar, also, is now selling what they call middle_ware, or Power Pac,
they also sell micrium products.
What I would like to make is a device which can log measurement
information in a SD card, then act as a mass storage device and let a
PC read those data as a normal file.
While the licensing schemes of micrium and IAR are clear enough to
me, I have a doubt about the microsoft "FATxx" implementation license.
Micrium, in fact, says that they can provide you with a FAT-free
storage model, apaprently in order to provide a more robust flash
based file system scheme, and to not be bound to the microsoft
licensing requirement.
As far as I can read, there is no discussion of this in the IAR
advertising. They simply say that their file system is "microsoft compatible".
Anybody knows something more on this subject?
Shall I pay royalties to Microsoft for my device to show PC-readable files?
Or is it possible to be "compatible" without the need to pay royalties?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Antonio

As far as I know, using long file names of FAT32 causes the
neccessarity to pay royalties. Using FATxx only without LFN is free.
