Tools advice for lpc2468 - Martijn Broens - Oct 23 16:04:44 2008

Hi All,

I'm sorry to trouble you all with my questions but as i'm new to the
arm, so far only worked with msp430, pic, atmel, renesas, i was
wondering if you all could give some advise.

I'm wondering what to get. i ordered the LPC2478 bundel from enbedded
artist.com and would like to get started with that. Up until now i
used to work with Crossworks ide and mplab and AVR studio all of
which have a very nice J-tag so i can set breakpoints for debug
purposes.

I'd like to do more with GCC but as far as i can see the side effect
to that is that i will no onger have an ide right?? or is there
something like AVR studio for the LPC series?

What would be the best way to set break points? i read some posts
about the onboard debugger, where can i get more infor on that. is
that sufficiant?

what tools, ide etc but even more books can you recommend?

again sorry for asking things that have probebly been asked several
times before but i could not find the answers that i'm looking for.

I also found some schematics from wiggler on the files section is
that any good? if so i think i can build one myself on th board an
have it as a default in my projects. icw an FTDI chip

BTW i have the Ulink from Keil can that be used??

thanks in advance

Martijn Broens

Well, Crossworks for ARM is very good value for money - especially if
you're already familiar with it for another micro. Uses the GCC
compiler. Works with very nice Jtag for breakpoints/debugging etc.

I recently evaluated Keil, IAR and Crossworks. Everyone has their
favourite but I would say that Crossworks represents the best value
for money, has the best IDE and very good support. Board Support
Packages always seem to be the most up-to-date aswell.

Just to add my 2 =80cents.

I've just bring home a IAR Kickstart for the LPC2468 (and then the
256KB baseline version of the compiler + PowerPac RTOS).
The Kickstart comes with everything you need, the board the J-Link
(made by segger) that can be used with "every" ARM micro and a
kickstart version of the compiler (32KB limit).
The board comes with a lot of example (USB device, LAN, etc).

I think the Kickstart edition is a great value; The baseline edition
of the EWB is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Personally I
think that IAR compiler is far superior that gcc.

Best regards
Pietro

I agree.

We also bought two licenses of base line 256KB EWARM for work. It is
quite good. We are also paying for the annual maintanence to catch
up with the support. I think it is worth the money as ARM based
MCU is one direction to go. We also got quite some J-Links at work
for various usages.

I have not compared IAR's compiler with GCC though.

It is said that Ulink can only be used with Keil, not other packages.
J-Link can be used with IAR, Keil and CrossWorks.

I think that J-Link can be used even with eclipse (or any other GDB
capable environment) using the Segger GDB-Server
(http://www.segger.com/jlink_arm_software_gdb.html).

RE: Tools advice for lpc2468 - Martijn Broens - Oct 27 3:21:51 2008

Hi Everyone,

Thanks a lot for al the hints and responses.

I've decided, since I already know the environment, to go for the Crossworks
environment. Including the Crossconnect.

In the past I've tried IAR with the msp and atmel, but wasn't that fond of
it meanly since they changed there syntax from one release to the other and
I had to rework my code. I know this can happen with any but still.

Any way, today I'll be receiving my hardware and the lic will come one of
these days. And I'll be off.

Again thanks for the input. And hope to make some contributions to the
groupe in the future.

thanks mb
