help with the 68hc24 pru - MIKE - Nov 17 19:45:00 2003

hello everyone im trying to connect the 68hc24 pru to a hc11e1. i
have made the follwoing connections and still cant get the pru to
interface with the hc11.

68hc24 68hc11
pru mode pin 43: is tied to plus 5 volts
AS pin 42: to stra/AS hc11
reset pin 39: reset pin hc11
r/w pin40: r/w/strb hc11
e pin41: buffered enabled pin hc11
pin 35 to 38: a/d multiplexed outputs pc3 to pc0
pin 30 to 33: a/d multiplexed outputs pc7 to pc4
a12 pin6 : hc11 a12 pin
a13 pin5: hc11 a13 pin
a14 pin 4: hc11 a14 pin
a15 pin: hc11 a15 pin
irqn pin28: tied to +5 volts thru a 100 k resistor
i/o test pin2: tied to gnd
gnd pin 29: tied to gnd
+vdd pin17: tied to +5 volts
cs pin44: hc11 a11 pin
strb pin18: r/w /strb pin hc11
stra pin7: AS/stra hc11

im wondering if there is any neccessary decoding needed for the
r/w /strb pin and the as/stra pin, since these are dual function
pins from the hc11.also is there any necessary intilaization neeeded
software wise to make this interface work properly.

RE: help with the 68hc24 pru - Kerry Berland - Nov 17 20:03:00 2003

Well, realize that this may not be very helpful-depending on why you¡Çre
working with the 68HC24-but my understanding is that the 68HC24 is no
longer available (at least outside Motorola for use in its emulators).
They have taken the documentation off the website, last time I looked.
If this is for a new product, suggest you take a look at the PSD813
series from ST. These parts provide glueless connection to the 68HC11,
provide the port replacement function, and also include flash and RAM
memory.

Best regards,

Kerry Berland

RE: help with the 68hc24 pru - Nigel Johnson - Nov 17 20:10:00 2003

It may not be available from Motorola, but production is in full swing at
TEKMOS. I think they go for about $9 each in hundreds. Now if I could
just find someone making the 68HC811 things would be rosy!

Depending on mode required, should be tied to 'HC11 Moda and
Modb. Normal mode : all pulled up, Boot Mode: all pulled low.
See data sheet for more details.

should be E clk, pin 5^

should be tied to HC11 /IRQ pin with more like 10K pullup^

> i/o test pin2: tied to gnd
> gnd pin 29: tied to gnd

make sure it's bypassed at the chip^

Not! ^ STRA and STRB are interrupt INPUTS, associated with port
B and C. Should not be connected to HC11.

See note above.

also is there any necessary initialization

Shouldn't be. Looks just like original PortA and PortB on
'HC11. Regards,

They were very good to me when I blew up my EVM, hc24+++ 24Vdc on the
expanded MPX pins :-((

AMEN. I did encourage Tekmos to make them too, perhaps if enough of
us pester them......

Re: help with the 68hc24 pru - Robert Smith - Nov 18 8:58:00 2003

Mike --

I suggest that you check the 68HC24 data sheet for its example schematic.
You may have to go searching archives since Motorola obsoleted the 68HC24
some time ago. Also try the Moto 68HC11 area for application
notes/engineering bulletins that may show other application
designs/suggestions.

However, given the obsolete status of the 'HC24 I would suggest that you
look at other products.

An excellent example is the old WaferScale Integration (WSI) Peripherial
System Devices such as the

the PSD913 family. These perform the port replacement function plus more
and provide quantities of Flash based expansion memory plus additional RAM
space.

A good place to start might be the --
