WHY? One of my products that uses the HC11 (HC811 originally)
has been around for 12 years now and it will be the same for another
twelve or even more. There have been some software changes to
cater for different markets and client requirements in other parts of
the world...BUT I would have been quite happy with the HC811.
The code does fit into 2K.
So I have been using a few thousands of the HC711 OTP in the
past year and will be using it untill it is no longer available. Yes it
is expensive for what is is used for but it would be more
expensive to redesign the product, rewrite the software and MOST
of all wasing a LOT of time in getting the product re-approved.

Pretty much all of this would have been not necessary had Motorola
given me, say, a pin compatible upgrade such as an HC12. A small
software change and recompile would have done the trick and I and
many more people would have been loyal and happy VEGEMITES!

Pin compatibility is something that the 8051, PICs and AVR (I presume
others as well) do offer for newer devices that replace older ones.

Don't want to unless it's pin compatible to the HC711 :-))

Hmmm I have the strange feeling we have had this discussion before :-)
