Hi Peter ! Why don't you try the older MC68B50 ACIA. It is still a good option for the HC11. The chip is obsolete, but you can still find thousands of it almost for free because it was second sourced by many other semiconductor manufacturers like AMI , Fairchild, etc.. You can get 76K and more. The 16550 needs some external extra hardware and I don't think that you will get a surprising result because of the HC11 bandwith limitations compared to a PC microprocessor.
