Question Regarding the download process of BUFFALO in SRAM - circuitcyco - Oct 8 5:25:00 2005

Hello...
I am the student currently doing the final year project on m68hc11
evaluation board.

I faced some difficulties on download the buffalo into SRAM. In order
to do this, I have to put the MCU in bootstrap mode and use s19 file
downloader to download the buffalo in.
But the downloader kept complaining that my board is not connected or
it is not in download mode. But I have checked the connection and
everything is fine.

So hopefully that there is anyone who can help me on this. The
downloader that I used is written by Randy Sargent and the buffalo s19
file that I used is buf34.s19. Is there any other downloader available?

I am curious with the RS232 connection as well. I just used 3 signals
from host PC to the board, that is Tx, Rx and GND. The Tx (pin 3 of
DB9) is connected to MAX232 pin 13 while the Rx (pin 2 of DB9) is
connected to MAX232 pin 14. The Tx from MCU (PD1) is connected to pin
11 while the Rx from MCU (PD0) is connected to pin 12 of MAX232. Is the
connection ok?

I tried to use oscillospe to trace the signal transmitted from MCU to
host PC. But nothing is detected even if I pressed the RESET button.
May I know what is the problem. The MCU that I use is fresh from the
manufacturer, meaning that I never configure anything inside. Will this
cause the problem to the s19 file download process.

Hope to get some advice from you guys soon. Your suggestion is highly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Memory serves me that the downloader program was written using a very
buggy software development system and won't work on a PC using anything
greater than a 80486.

I could be wrong about this - I'm just posting this as a stopgap to
give you an idea of what's happening and trust the others will reply in
detail as to the various ways to overcome this common problem.

I use and recommend 'hcload'. It is a Win app that does everything for
getting the hc11 started, such the config settings, programming eeprom, and
loading memory. A web search will turn up where it can be downloaded.

Donald E Haselwood
