Hi list, I just received a very disturbing email from a client stating that an HC11 microcontroller that I have designed into a few products for them (MC68HC11D0FN) over the years has just been discontinued. Does anyone have any information related to this? The HC11 tab on the Motorola:Products menu of their website is no longer active. Thank you for any information you can provide. David B. David -- Motorola appears to be "streamlining" the 'HC11 family. The 'A' family was discontinued about year back and I recall hearing the 'D' family was also. Don't expect an official response from Motorola here. You will probably have to contact your sales representitive or your distributer. From my point of view, the signals from Motorola are probably that the 'HC11 has a limited lifetime. You can buy some time by approaching some of the brokers of obsolete, rare chips. I suggest the chipdir website as starters. http://www.xs4all.nl/~ganswijk/chipdir/js/reqchip.htm The above link will take you directly to a request obsolete chip page. The generic URL for chipdir is www.chipdir.com but they have many mirror sites and you will eventually get redirected to the above location. Buy enough to keep your client happy for a few years and start re-laying out the board. Given the probable limited lifetime of the 'HC11 family, you probably should consider a different MCU. The 'HC12 is the natural upgrade path for the 'HC11 family and the 'HC08 is a very nice device also. If you decide to stick with the 'HC11 devices the E series probably has the best probable lifetime. It's probably just the suffix, because Motorola changed it to "CFN2" awhile ago. This chip shows no sign of being discontinued (except the 40-pin DIP package). Motorola now has status and pricing on most of its chips online. Go to http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/library/prod_lib.jsp and then narrow down to the product you're interested in. They show production status and price at the bottom of the results page, under "Orderable Parts". Dear Members, Motorola is still selling millions of HC11s a year and we are not dropping support of this device anytime in the near future. Yes there has been some "streamlining" of the number of different units we sell and we are not developing new HC11 devices but there are lots of major customers still doing new designs with the HC11. It will be many years before we stop shipping the last HC11. The end of life process for any device takes years after we start it. If you go to the web site and look up the product it will tell you what stage the device is in. Level 1 is "Product Newly Intro'd / Ramp-up" Level 2 is "Product Rapid Growth" Level 3 is "Product Stable Growth/ Mature" Level 4 is "Product Mature / Saturation" Level 5 is "Product Decline" Level 6 is "Product Phase Out / See Last Order Date" --start of end of life process, GPCN sent out here. Level 7 is "Product Last Shipments" Level 8 is "Removed from Active Portfolio" You can see where your device is at by going to http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/site/taxonomy.jsp?nodeId=03M0ym4t3ZGM0ynTpnLn <http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/site/taxonomy.jsp?nodeId=03M0ym4t3ZGM0ynTpnLn> and then click on your product family and then look up your device. On a related note you can also subscribe to the device so you get notifications of any changes to the device. If you do that you will get a email notice of when the GPCN (General Part Change Notification) for the end of life process has started. You will then have at least 6 months to place last orders (still a few years notice before last parts ship). -----Original Message----- From: PFC1 [mailto:] Sent: Tuesday, October 08, 2002 12:45 PM To: Subject: Re: [m68HC11] MC68HC11D0FN Obsolete? Dear Ernst: It is very kind from you & Motorola to give this quick response in the case of this kind of comments. The information & web link you are giving is very important and at the same time avoids panic. I personally appreciate very much this. Thank you again. Just to amplify on Bob Gardner's info-- If you go on the Motorola website to the Product Information Page for the MCU in question-- MC68HC11D0-- find the section called ORDERABLE PARTS INFORMATION where it gives specific part numbers and packages. There's a column that says LIFE CYCLE DESCRIPTION. That's where the codes appear that Bob has pointed out. You can even see a couple of phase 6, last-time-buy, for the D0. I don't think there's a direct translation of these codes into years. We recently asked about this to a Motorola sales person. My guess is that for a 68HC11, phase 3 is good for 5 years, phase 4 for 3 years. But this is just a guess. Ultimately it depends on demand, which is very hard to predict. If you tick the SUBSCRIBE FOR UPDATES box on the product page for any part you're interested in, you'll be notified when changes are made to the information on that part. Then you should get notification of a change of status, which should give you time to redesign. They typically provide a last-time-buy opportunity whereby you can purchase enough parts to last until the redesign is complete. One interesting gauge. Take a look at the volume of new product design questions on this list, and contrast it to the 68HC05_08 and 68HC12 lists. Seems as though there are a lot more new designs using 68HC908 and 68HC12, if this is any indication.
