nRF24L01 performance and use - merapcb - Jun 27 10:50:55 2008

Hi. I have searched the group for nRF24L01 references but though there
are a few mentions, nothing dedicated. So this is a dedicated post/query.

Has anyone used the nRF24L01 for a production unit? I am considering
this for a sensor network that is outdoors and is supposed to have a
100 meter range (with possible obstructions).

How well does the unit perform? What are the main challenges? How
about reliability?

Appreciate any info. Thanks.

RE: nRF24L01 performance and use - microbit - Jun 27 11:25:09 2008

If you want a 100 meter (non line of sight) range, you might want to stay away from 2.4 GHz.
If power consumption is not an issue then you can use it providing you use FHSS (refer FCC Part
47). If you meet the various requirements such as max. dwelling time, number of channels etc. you
can use up to 1 Watt EIRP, plenty all right then.
In that family nRF905 would be a much better choice, but then your data rate drops.

Apart from that, for its cost the nRF24(L)01 is a fine hybrid in my experience. Somewhat
inflexible compared to some others, but many, many apps don't really need more than what this
chip/hybrid offers. Considering their very high integration, they perform very well wrt. Spurious,
TX splatter et al.

I think that most of the wireless mice and keyboards use them. It's Nordic's
main market, according to my contact at my Nordic distributor. They seem
reliable enough.

Hi

I used nRF2401 in many projects and it works very well. Using a monopole
1/4wave antenna (integrated in PCB) I managed to get over 100 meters
range, however indoor it drops to something between 5-25 meters. It
works very well specially when you manage to properly match the antenna.
