Sentilla anyone? - merapcb - Aug 6 11:00:56 2008

Has anyone heard about, or used, Sentilla that runs a MSP430 and CC2420?

Hi ,
Sentilla formerly MoteIV is a company that produces motes which they call tmotes. These tmotes are msp430 based platforms , that can be programmed via usb, have some sensors on it, and a CC2420 802.15.4 compliant radio. It supports TinyOS a tiny operating system , mainly used by the wireless sensor networks research community.
now sentilla has stopped production of some of these platforms , because they are promoting their new platform which supports java on embedded devices - such as motes.
Tell me , if you need more informaation.
Som

Hi Som,

Actually I have found interesting the topic. However at their webpage
there is no much info.

I wonder what is the solution they provide on inventory management
where RfID fails, according to them...

"Cell computing" sounds interesting, but what is it used for exactly?

Thank you!

just an ad mans hype for basic wireless networking, not even that smart.
MOTE's suggest tiny things, those I've seen were pretty large.

Re: Sentilla anyone? - Adam Dunkels - Aug 10 19:23:50 2008

We've been using their older board (Tmote Sky) as a development platform
for the Contiki OS for several years: http://www.sics.se/contiki/. The
board is a very good platform for experimenting with wireless
802.15.4-style networking. Their newest hardware is based on the same
design as their Tmote Sky board (and should be compatible), but in a
nicer package and a smaller PCB.

The uniqueness of Sentilla is that they are providing a certified Java
VM on top of the MSP430. Using Java should make programming wireless
network applications easier than banging C directly on the MSP430. There
are several other Java VMs available, but to the best of my knowledge,
the Sentilla VM is the only one that passes the certification tests that
allow them to use the Java logo.

I have, however, not tested their Java software myself yet, because I
have only used it as a hardware platform for Contiki, but am very
interested in seeing Java running on a low-power radio network.

Just one remark: the board does not support 802.15.4: it lacks a timer
with sufficient resolution.

But it does support the 802.15.4 PHY through the CC2420, even if it does
not do full 802.15.4, which is good enough for many purposes.
