Powering Radio Boards with the MSP430F5438-EXP Board - John Westmoreland - Sep 24 20:30:56 2009
Hello All,
I was wondering how some of you *reliably* power boards such as the RF2500T
with the MSP430F4538-EXP board. I have two EXP boards, one the connector is
sortof tight and the other one the RF2500T boards fit somewhat loosely. I
don't want to solder those down - so I wanted to ask how some of you get a
reliable connection.
Thanks In Advance,
John W.

Are you talking about the 6-pin connector called "RF4" on the F5438 EXP board? Mine came
unpopulated.

OCY,
You can connect with RF4 - which is most certainly more reliable - but as
you point out there are no connectors there - you have to get the header
from Mill-Max.
I am asking specifically about RF3 - EzRF Target header - 18 pins. Guess I
should have made that clear - but since the board doesn't come with RF4
headers installed - my mistake thinking that was clear.
Thanks,
John

John,
For RF3, the header is there (on the EXP board). But RF2500T does not have the
corresponding socket. You have to solder a socket there. Bare boards will not make good
contact with the header on the EXP board.
0.1 inch spaced header and sockets are very common. But I have never seen a 2x9 socket.
You may have to get 2x10 socket and improvise. 3M part number for this kind of 2x10 socket
is 8520-4500.

OCY,
Yeah, that's what I thought some would say - I was hoping for a better
solution - but guess there really isn't one.
I have some samples from Mill-Max around here somewhere - I think it'll be
easier just to solder the headers down for RF3 for my boards - and that
doesn't bulk up my RF2500T boards.
Thanks,
John

TI makes this real easy - you have to desolder BATT1 (battery holder 1) to
get the connector on for RF4...
