MSP430F5xxx series availability - CHAD - Sep 29 2:42:02 2009

I was about a week away from sending a board off for fab and did a check of the inventory for F5418.
It turns out there is no stock and leadtime is 20 weeks, so I may have to downgrade to F2618

Does anyone know the situation regarding MSP430F5xxx parts?

Don't forget that the pinout for the F5x parts is not the same as the F1x
and F2x parts. You will have to do some re-layout of the board. Have you
considered using the other, larger memory size parts in the F5x series. If
these have a better availability then you can use these as an interim
solution before using the F5418 later.

It seems that delivery on just about all parts that I need has moved out as
the manufacturers have been cutting their inventory during this downturn.
It has happened before. Remember the downturns in the '80s and 90's with
RAM and Flash on allocation where orders for parts were declined as the
entire production was sent to a few big customers.

This seems to be a strangely fluid situation. a couiple of weeks ago
several suppliers were showing most 2 series QFN parts on long lead
times, yet suddenly this week those same parts are in stock. I guess the
moral is to watch stocks of the parts you rely on and to grab them when
they become available, either that or switch to a more reliable supplier
if you can, but who is that? Most of them have had their dramas over the
years.

I am in the process of changing the layout back to the msp430F2618
right now. It would have been good to use the F5419A with the 4 USCI
devices and more ram to provide us with higher thruput. I'll just
have to squeeze as much as I can out of the F2618, or wait for the
next semiconductor boom.

Cheers

But how does the near-future stock for F2618 parts look? Be aware that, as others have mentioned on this and 2 previous TI-stock related threads, lead times for a lot of TI parts are said to be about 20 weeks. Be sure that by the time you finished changing the layout and firmware you won't find out that the part you changed to is also not available.

My guess would be that due to the high demand on these parts, the classic distributors (those with online stock) have resorted to buy TI parts from surpluss-resellers, because otherwise clients will not only but the TI parts from surpluss-resellers, but the whole BOM. I'm doing exactly that right now.
