The 500uA current consumption during operation seems a bit of a killer
to me. I 'm curfrently (pun intentional) a bit of a fan of the TPS6031x
family, not quite as low Iq as the MAX1724, but a true OFF and rather
nice auto snooze feature, rpovided you can live with just 20mA, or
alternatively can use 2Vin at slightly higher currents (say for your
transmitter). These are ideal for single cell use for zinc air, silver
oxides, manganese coins, NiMH, Nicads (if you really must), or
conventional alkalines. The rationale of using single slice solar cells
and boosting them doesn't rally hold true, since the recommended
circuits include the use of another Dc-Dc switcher, and the total space
consumed would permit a more complex solar cell giving adequate Vout anyway.

Cheers
