The purpose of this group is to foster exchange of information on the Texas Instruments MSP430 family of microcontrollers and related tools. Everyone welcome, all levels of familiarity/expertise.
Contest flamage. - Bill Westfield - Nov 1 20:05:31 2009
What's with this trend with "submit a video to enter our design contest"?
First (?) Freescale/Digikey on their "Tower System", and now TI/Avnet/UBM
with their "how low can you go" MSP430 contest. A VIDEO?! It's tough
enough to document a design in a readable (as well as technically correct)
manner, and now they want to add the need for video production, which is no
small matter.
Perhaps future "design contest" winners will feature good-looking presenters
with appropriate make-up, scanty costumes, and laugh tracks, rather than
interesting designs. Feh.
(perhaps "they" think making a video is easier than a written entry, and
this will result in MORE participants? I dunno. Towergeeks seems to have
had a whopping 5 video participants since they started in June. "Camera
hog" and "microcontroller engineer" are stereotypes usually assigned to
rather different groups of people... Of course, I seem to be one of those
old-fashioned types that would prefer text (skimmable, searchable,
copy&pasteable, etc) over the sort of 'video blogging' that seems to be
catching on, even when the video IS well-produced. Perhaps the "next
generation" thinks differently.)

They are trying to be Cool? Hip? Down with it? whatever the latest
stupid name is for aware of, and dumbly following the latest fashionable
trends.
Personally I don't get facebook, think a twitter is some kind of
slightly stupid person, a tweet is what my canary does when Sylvester
the cat is after him, and I reserve my video making for holidays and the
grandchildren.
Perhaps dealing with technology inures you to it, perhaps I'm just old
and boring, I just don't have the urge to expose my private life to the
world.
In this case I don't think video is much of a medium for conveying
technical complexity anyway, and being a technical whiz doesn't mean you
have any skill as an editor producer or director, perhaps is because the
competition promoters can't read a schematic.

Re: Re: Contest flamage. - OneStone - Nov 1 23:39:08 2009
I've often had that thought too.
Okay guys your quickfire challenge for today, design and layout a Direct
injection ECU for a 4 cylinder econobox using an MSP430F2132. The winner
gets immunity
Your main challenge starting later today, will be to complete the
software for the kidney dialysis machine controller you designed last
week, you have 48 hours to complete this challenge. The engineer whose
software is deemed least elegant by our viewers will have their scope
confiscated and be sent home.
Nice thought, probably can't be dumbed down enough for popular appeal though

I meant LCROSS (Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite) spacecraft
slamming into the moon on 10Oct2009.
It was hyped by mainstream news as NASA "blowing-up" the moon.
The poor uneducated viewers expecting to see the moon blow-up - instead
witnessed an anti-climatic white-out of the cameras. The impact was so large
that it's energy was mostly converted to heat. The moon didn't even flinch
but it generated tons of nerdy data.
The tracking algorithm was really marvelous to watch in the final few
minutes - if you're a geek.
