The reason? Whoever writes/wrote those examples is a BASIC weenie
(along with most OOPic users, although that may be changing, given
Java's popularity)

In the code, shouldn't I replace the "$" with its ascii decimal equivalent(i.e. 36)? Or is enclosing the character in double quotation marks fine?
