Where to begin? - "tom.ates" - Mar 20 13:24:13 2008

We are highschool students working on building a Mark III Sumo-Bot for
an advanced science class. We have never done programming or have any
experience in building robots. We have purchased the kit - Mark III
Complete Kit (OOPic Version) and are ready to get started. However, we
aren't sure on how to go abouts beginning. We have printed out the Mark
III User's Guide as recommended by a teacher. We're not familiar with
this vocabulary and were wondering if anyone could help us out.

Thanks in advance!

Knowing that there is a book is helpful if you can find one. It is
out of print and the used copy on www.alibris.com sells for $291.09 -
ABSOLUTELY INSANE!

So, get the sample programs from the Mark III group, study them, think
about what they do and then ask questions. The one you want is
msmarkiii.osc by Pete Skeggs.

It is regrettable that the V5 documentation has gone away because it
will match the samples better than V6. OTOH, V6 seems to work pretty
well with the B.2.2+ chip AFAICT.

Read all the stuff at www.oopic.com

Post questions here as our moderator (Dennis Clark) wrote the book and
there are some knowledgeable people haunting this group.

I recommend a book by Dennis Clark titled "Programming and Customizing
the OOPic Microcontroller". It explains a lot of the hidden quirks of
the OOPic that do not show up in the online documentation, otherwise the
online manual (www.oopic.com) is an excellent source as well. Those two
sources and this forum have been my main support, and then you need to
start doing some basic projects to get a feel for the programming and
interfacing techniques. Structure the test programs around what you will
actually want to implement on your robot.

cheers,
Matt

Wow, I should vacuum seal mine as a collector's item! Even better would
to sell it to someone who could make use of it, I don't use mine much
anymore. Try Amazon.com, about $100.

I'm working on getting the rights to the PDF version of this book. M-H doesn't want to
do a second edition, so this is all that I'm going to get. Legal is being a bit slow with
this but I have assurances from the publisher that they will let go of the Copyright to me
for it.
