'basic' software - Lez - Apr 11 8:54:35 2006

I used pbc on a 386, what would be a good basic compiler to run under xp?

It would be nice to have something that could shell out the programmer
software so I dont have to quit, run the programmer, qui, run whatever
again etc.

I dont need fancy emulation/break points etc etc just a stable good compiler

I use PicBasic Pro as a basic compiler
with their serial programmer and Microcode studio as an IDE.
you can download a free demo version. it will only handle a few pics though.
Enough to let you know it you want to purchase it or not.

It easy to use and it will run fine in XP which is what I am using.

Re: 'basic' software - Lez - Apr 11 9:36:08 2006

Thanks, I tried the download of mplabs ide 6 and just gave up, then
went on ebay looking for a new 386/486.........
I cant believe I'm looking for old hardware because new software is
such a pain to set up!

All I had before was a batch file like this

c:\edit temp.bas
c:\pbc\pbc.exe temp.bas
c:\progmr\prog.exe temp.hex
c:\batch.bat

worked great etc, ran my favourite editor, edit!, compiled(or not) and
them write it to the pic for a test.

(I never got around to building an in-circuit cable cable, just
swapped the chip in.out)

You don't need MPLabs unless you program the pic18 series. Then it uses
the MPLAB assembler.

Re: 'basic' software - rtstofer - Apr 11 21:04:39 2006

I don't think you need obsolete hardware for this. I am using WinXP
and have had MPLAB IDE 7.2 running for a while (as well as versions
prior). For giggles, I downloaded PicBasic Pro DEMO and installed it.
I created a project in MPLAB specifying the PicBasicPro suite and
pointed to PBPWDEMO.EXE for the executable.

OK, the project was created but it didn't compile. I wandered through
the support pages and there was a batch file that registered a couple
of things (it's in a .zip file with a couple of dll's). I tried that;
no good.

For whatever reason (not related to PATH, I did all that), the
Microchip P16F876A header file could not be found from the PBPDEMO
16F876A header file. So, I finally gave up in disgust and edited the
PBPDEMO header to specify the full path to the Microchip header. Now
everything works.

I am reasonably certain there is a right way to do this but as I don't
plan to use PBP, I didn't want to spend any more time on it.

If your device programmer works under MPLAB, you are all set.

I like using the MPLAB IDE and I use it with cc5x and PIC C Lite all
the time. I am using the PicStart Plus programmer so integration is
not a problem.

Being able to integrate PBP into MPLAB IDE is a plus.

Ha thats the problem I had, just did the obvious and download mplab
and a demo basic compiler, but it wont find things, dropping to a
command window and typing the commands by hand (when in the right
directory) worked, so I thought it was a path thing........

I'm _sure_ I had it working with something like mplab v5 or something

Re: 'basic' software - rtstofer - Apr 12 9:59:06 2006

Using version 7.2 of MPLAB, the integration is clean. There is no
need to drop out of the IDE. Yes, I did have to set up MPLAB to point
to the executable c:\pbpdemo\pbpdemow.exe but, other than that, no
real setup to do. It is important to point to the Windows executable
instead of the DOS version.

I added the MPASM Suite and PBPDEMO paths to the system path (I think
user path would also work) and that's about it.

The thing with the 'include' files is still something I don't
understand. If I had bought the product, I would send them email for
support.

It really was a simple install under XP. I didn't check the resulting
hex file. I am assuming it works properly but I didn't program a chip
or anything.
