PIC12F629 Powered Magazine Cover - "John J. McDonough, WB8RCR" - Sep 11 7:19:12 2008
I'm surprised that there hasn't been more noise on this group about the
Esquire cover.
Selected copies of the October issue of Esquire contain "e-ink" on the
cover. The e-ink is driven by a PIC16F629. On their website Esquire dared
hackers to teach them something they didn't know.
The cover turns out to be pretty hobbyist-friendly. The circuit board has
the progamming header brought out to the board edge, the two e-ink displays
are connected to connectors rather than soldered in place, the 629 is a
Flash chip that can be reprogrammed, and the program is not copy protected.
There are SIX batteries in the cover, Esquire claims they are guaranteed
three months but should last for six.
For six bucks.
LOL - I haven't even looked inside the magazine itself to see whether there
is anything worth reading.
I've only begin wading through their code. The display is pretty
interesting - seems to hold it's state when removed from the circuit which I
suspect would lead to a pretty low power consumption in some applications.

Sorry for the dupes, I'm sending this to another group also and I seem to
keep getting it wrong. Must not have had enough coffee yet.

How'd you get a copy of the issue? I've checked my local book shops and
no one has a "select copy" of this issue for me to even get.
Inquiring minds want to know! I'm certainly interested.
thanks,

I certainly didn't do anything special. I simply went to my local Barnes
and Noble and it was there on the magazine rack, flashing at me.

Well, that could explain it! None of my local bookshops is a B&N. I
don't tend to use "big box" stores. I'll have to go to some 'burbs
stripmall to get one. Sounds like a good reason for a trip. :)

OK,
I found it, got it and yawned a bit. I'll hack it up in a week or
so. :) Has anyone tried to read the magazine that this tech is
attached to? I tried and gave up in disgust - It must be 160 pages of
ads with about 15 pages of articles, but since I could not find a TOC, I
couldn't find any of the stories! Geeze, who "reads" this kind of crap?
have fun,
DLC
