Insane Parts Packaging - demolitron - May 5 0:03:01 2009
I hope this is alright but I have to gripe about NewArk! My shipment today cost more in
S/H than for the parts themselves. Every single part# was packed in an anti-static bag
(that's just fine), and then in a plastic bag (???) and then in a 6"x9" bubble wrap lined
paper envelope (?!?!), and some of those were packed in foam lineD cardboard boxes! Then
add in a BUNCH of packing paper to the shipping box.
Yikes, the box that showed up was HUGE. I didn't think it was for me at first... Digikey packs all IC's in tubes and those tubes in anti-static bags. Passives are just in bags and the whole lot is protected with paper in the shipping box. A whole mess of parts comes in a tiny little box. Simple, cheap, and light!
I'm just in shock and I'm not sure I'll order from Newark again. Anyone else have this experience with them?

Now that you mention it, I think Newark does tend to overpackage a bit, but
I've never really noticed that it had a big impact on S&H. I usually try to
batch up my orders for parts so that the shipping isn't a bit component,
anyway.
But thinking about it, you made me realize that my decision on where to
order has gotten pretty simple, mostly because Newark has the best prices on
PICs.
- If I need some oddball PIC that I can't get anywhere else, I order from
Microchip. They tend to be slower than Newark or Digikey, but when it comes
to PICs, they have the best prices, although their shipping tends to be
unfavorable.
- If the order is heavy on PICs, I order from Newark. Their price on PICs
is within pennies of Microchip's and they get me the order fast. Plus, they
have other stuff I might need.
- If the order isn't heavy on PICs, I'll order from Digikey. Their prices
on PICs are quite a bit higher than Newark, but their prices on other stuff
tends to be lower. Plus, they have LOTS of other stuff. Digikey's customer
service is stellar, plus they were started by a ham.
- On a rare occasion I will order from Mouser. Once in a while they have a
good deal on something I need, although their PIC prices are all over the
map. Sometimes they are very good, often they are very bad. Their prices
on non-PIC stuff is usually not as good as Digikey, but sometimes it is.
They have the best deal on shipping small orders, but it usually takes a lot
longer than Newark or Digikey.
Newark, Digikey and Mouser are all pretty good at getting your stuff on the
way, although Digikey does beat the others hands down. But the main
difference seems to be distance. Mouser's delivery is slow because they are
farther away from me. You can't predict where Microchip is going to ship
something from, so their delivery is usually a surprise. Perhaps worse, they
will sometimes ship from multiple locations.

Then one day you'll order a couple of transformers as well, nice & heavy &
solid. These bouncing around will cheerfully crush everything in their
path.
Then you'll complain that everything was under packed...
NewArk have probably had too many complaints about goods damaged in
shipping, and this is how they dealt with it.

My take on it, being formerly involved in wholesale elex parts shipping and
receiving, is (A) that small things are more frequently lost than bigger
things ... including packages; (B) added space is a great buffer for small
light-weight items; (C) and most importantly it costs a LOT more to stock
many different sizes of boxes than it is to have 2 or 3 standard sizes
only. If they are nicely imprinted, the smaller boxes will actually
sometimes cost more than larger ones, with equally pricey silkscreen setups
for each size, minimum order requirements, yadda, yadda, yadda.
And no shipping department ever wants to pack anything in a box small enough
to fit in a lunchbox:-) Some things may have changed a tad bit since the
high school daze of the late 50s and early 60s, but I'll bet not much.

i actually had this problem with DIGIKEY.
I told them off and sent email after email complaining about it
they said crap like 'DIMENSIONAL WEIGHT' which is just absurd.
After I said stuff like 'DIGIKEY is just in the business of selling cardboard boxes and stuffing it with their rubbish from the bin, and a few electronic parts"
They finally gave me half the money back, i was still ripped off..
If you have a complaint, then complain to them.
PS. I opened the box and weighed the parts. they came to about 100 grams while they charged me a 'Dimensional Weight" of 2lbs. Could have just shoved them in an envelope but no. I think some of these companies get some of the money for shipping. i asked DIGIKEY, then 'Why does the cardboard box have DIGIKEY' written on it?'
scammers. Maybe they are better now, my problem with them was like 3 years ago now.
Just be sure to complain and get some money back.
