Tracking Battery Condition - jpakrashi - Oct 29 2:15:47 2009
Hi Friends,
Here are the requirements:
In a critical setting where equipment are backed by UPS already, we need to monitor
all/any batteries that has deterioted/missing and send Signal identifying the bad/missing
battery.
Any idea/suggestion will be appreciated.

Kolkaka,
Funny you should ask. I'm working on a PIC project for monitoring batteries in my solar
system. I will be keeping a running account of my progress. There are some links that you
could look at. The link is: http://64.124.13.3/projects/PIC_Project
You need to supply more info about you environment, like your batteries, 2VDC, 5VDC,
12VDC, etc. Your budget, home grown or off the shelf?
Any way, back to my project. If you wish, send me your Email address and I will create a
mailing list for the project.

It clearly depends on the UPS. The last system I worked on was 1000 kVA and used 4
parallel strings of about 70 6V batteries.
I used to have a service company come in and individually test the batteries.
Finding deteriorated batteries without being able to put a full load on the battery is
next to impossible. Measuring voltage is meaningless unless it clearly indicates a
failure. Just because the voltage is correct doesn't mean the battery will provide enough
current.
So, define the size of your UPS, how many strings, how many batteries per string, voltage
rating of the batteries and, most importantly, the battery technology. If this is a large
UPS and it is not using wet cell technology (preferably in glass cases), you will probably
never have a reliable system. There's just no way to keep 300 'no maintenance' batteries
in good condition. One battery fails, the entire string failes and the remaining strings
can't carry the load. So they fail too.
There's a reason power plants and telephone companies use lead-acid technology in glass
cases.

I built a remote control car battery tester a few years ago,
I would switch a load to drag the battery all the way down the switch to
charge
And displayed the charge cycle in a graph on the PC screen charge v over
time. You could tell when the battery was beginning to fail looking at the
curve. I was kind of crude but that's what the customer wanted and he was
very happy with it. He would rate his batteries and use the best ones in the
finals of the races.
I know this is not what is needed here but thought I would chime in anyway.
