A discussion group for the PICMicro microcontroller. Also called the Microchip PIC, this list is dedicated to the use and abuse of this fine, simple, microcontroller. Close to topic posts are welcome, ie. general electronics.

Please help me. I am new to PIC - grpaha2002 - May 30 8:05:00 2003

Hello
I don't have much knowledge in PIC but have used BasicStamp few
years ago.
What I like to make is the controller with 5 infrared sensor elements
and two relay outputs.
I am working on about twenty years old printing press and very old
controller.
This controller have been giving me lots of headache with
intermittent shut down or fouls alarms.
Machine is very old but worth million dollars and the owner won't get
rid of this.

I may be able to achieve my project by small PLC but I would like to
try this with micro controller first.
I checked Motorola, National Semi, Stamp and Microchip. I found
Microchip Web site the most interesting.

My first question is how do I find the best programmer kit.
I am using AN865 and follow every thing in this application note.
http://www.microchip.com/1010/suppdoc/appnote/all/an865/index.htm

Second, do you know any very book to read to use PIC?

Thank you

You might go this site http://www.melabs.com/ for Mplab compiler and check
out Epic programmer (about $50). Someone posted about 2 wks ago about a book
"Programming and Customizing Picmicro Microcontrollers" ISBN 0-07-136172-3"
by Myke Predko about 1200 pages($48). I bought one and it worked great for
me. Or, if you're not wanting to get in to deep in this, you might try "Easy
Step'n" by David Benson. It has basic info and some board schematics and
codes that you might be able to use in your application.
good luck
