PICSTART Plus - In Circuit? - mippen2 - Nov 24 14:28:00 2003

Hello All!

I have an "old" PICSTART Plus programmer and I would like to use it
as an ICP.. Could I get some help with a simple schematic on the
interface to make this work?
I would like to fit it to a hardware that uses the ICD2 Programmer
interface.

/best regards

Michael

I have used the picstart plus by simply putting a header on my board that connects the relevant pins for a given processor, then take a socket for the processor and soldre the wires into the cups and putting header on the end of the wires.  Then you put the socket in the programmer and connect the header to the board and it programs.  The only thing to watch out for is that one of the pins you have to connect is vdd and you don't want the programmer to try to power your whole board so you may need to add a diode in there.

Hope that helps

Shawn

Hi

... and...

if you power the target board with the PICSTART, it may go down the
drain. It can't handle the current. I have however sucessfully powered
the target, and then connected my PICSTART, and then programmed the PIC.

Should work if the pins (often RB6 and RB7 - depends on PIC) are
connected to soething hi-Z; that is, if the RB6 and 7 are outputs
anyway. MCLR must also handle "abuse" from your PICSTART. /Sven
