Warp13 OR Picstart plus - AMIT KAPOOR - Aug 13 11:39:00 2004

Hello everyone ,
i need your guidance .
actually till now i was using pic16 series and i have programmer which support only pic12/14/16 series.
but now i want to jump to pic18 series so i need to buy pic18 programmer.i searched and found that there are two programmer : Picstart plus and warp13. warp 13 is cheaper and it is MPLAB compatible. Many of you must have used either PICstart plus or warp13 and must have reasons for there selection among the two.So i wanted to knw the pros and cons of these two before buying.i know warp13 is cheap but that is not the only criteria , if warp13 has some serious problems plzz let me know, and if there is some other programmer better than these two please tell me that too.
Help Me!
Thanx a LOT
Amit

WARP13 is great.  I have had no problems in two years.

Mine has been in use for almost a year with no real problems.

It won't program some of the newer chips within MPLAB because MPLAB
thinks it is a Picstart Plus that has a version of FW that is too old
to program those newer chips. I can however program the chips just
fine outside the IDE with the Warp13 software and the Warp13 software
actually programs the chips *much* faster than the MPLAB IDE (it's
like 1/3 the time).

They do have a driver that you can install which is supposed to make
the programming within MPLAB faster too. Perhaps if I installed this
driver I would be able to program chips such as the 18F1320 and
18F2320 within MPLAB but I haven't gotten around to trying it. Also
it looks like Newfound now has beta FW available for the Warp13 which
should bring it up to a PicStart FW level such that MPLAB will be
able to program the chips directly.

Actually, there is a third programmer you should consider - The
Olimex PIC-MCP-USB. Sparkfun.com sells them. I have had one for a
couple of months now, and it works great. It is powered by the USB
port, so no external power supply is needed - sweet!

BTW, check out some of Olimex's development boards. They have PIC
boards with onboard RS-232 (or USB) and a built-in ICSP connector.

I know I sound like an Olimex sales guy, but I'm not. I've just been
in PIC heaven since I got their programmer and development boards.
