Hi , help me out! actually last week i got pic18f458-I/P and pic18lf458-I/P as sample. 1.Now when i test them for 4 mhz ,everything works fine ...but when i test them for 16 or 24 mhz nothing goes fine ...they work unexpectedly...why so? according to data sheet max frequency is 40mhz...is there any limitation as these chips are sample....i dont think so ....oscillator is working fine as i tested with some other chips...... 2.what is the difference between PIC18f458-I/P and PIC18lf458-I/P ( "l" is there in this chip)......something related to frequency? Please do reply.............i am confused where i am going wrong... thanx Amit Regards

just out of interest what does the i/p
mean?
(Yes I am a newbie....)

Amit,
Are you configuring the pic for the right freq? You have to check
the configuration word of the chip to be in the right kind of oscillator frequency. Check
the datasheet of the chip for info on the conf word.
About the "L" on the chip it means that it works for lower voltages than normal. Once
again check the datasheet. Good luck.

The obvious question
that comes to mind is
did you set the oscillator config to the HS type as opposed to XT.
Also make sure the PLL is off if you do
not want to increment the frequency.
Check for correct Xtal cap values.
Sometimes engineering samples have amaximum operating frequency so check
for the absence of the marking ES From: AMIT

so PIC18F458-I/P means this is an "input" chip? What does that mean?

What does that mean? I think it means ... - input & max frequency ... or, it could perhaps be the package, but I don't think so. Leon |

mean? Industrial temperature range, PDIP plastic package. Check last page of its data sheet. Every Microchip MCU has this information on last page of its data sheet. Regards, Igor |

The suffix refers to temp range and package type: I = -40C to +85C E = -40C to +125C P = PDIP L = PLCC PT = TQFP SO = SOIC SS = SSOP Mike --- In , "Nigel Symes" <symesbris@h...> wrote: > so PIC18F458-I/P means this is an "input" chip? What does that mean? |

Thanks Mike, I knew you'd have a clear answer like
always.
Thanks,

Hi dear, I have a lot of expirence in working with PIC18Fxxxx. For 18F458 using any oscillator upto 40MHz its osc. must be HS. If you wan to opperate at 40Mhz use 10MHz crystal with 4x PLL enabled. It works great. even with 11MHz it works on 44MHz too but Microchip recommends not more then 40Mhz. PIC 18F series is a much better series, I love to work with theses 8bit powerplants. But I wish if they whre working on 80+ MIPS ;). Good Luck --- In , "Carlos Marcano" <carlosmarcano78@c...> wrote: > Amit, > > Are you configuring the pic for the right freq?
