PIC16F877 Programming Problem - demolitron - Sep 26 16:40:00 2004
Hello,
Please forgive me if this question has already been asked. If so
please point me to the thread.
I have the El Cheapo PIC Programmer and accompanying software. I
have been programming PIC16F77 devices for quite some time with it,
and without any problems. I have recenty aquired some PIC16F877
devices and they will simply not program. The data being returned,
as reported by ElCheapo is 0x03430 @ location 0x00. I have tried IC-
Prog as an alternate software.
Here is what I have already tried. I have used my scope to verify
MCLR is rising to 12.98V on command. The Data and Clock lines are
active and rising to VCC on command. VCC to the chip is 5.39V. In
addition I have tried grounding Port B.3 to disable the LVP mode. I
have also set the I/O delay in IC-Prog up to 40 in increments of 5.
So far nothing has worked.
I have programmed more PIC16F77 devices since to verify my hardware
is still working as specified.
My Programming PC is:
P4 3.2GHz
4GB DDR400 RAM
Windows XP Pro SP1
ElCheapo Software V. 0.84
IC-Prog Software V. 1.05C
Device: PIC16F77-20/P 03151TB
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have used the El Cheapo to program a 16F877 successfully. However,
I found the El Cheapo to be extremely unreliable on Win XP. I got a
similar message as you anywhere from 0 to 4 times before it would
actually program my chip. I finally gave in and bought an Olimex USB
programmer from sparkfun.com.
