The A parts are a new CMOS version, and are cheaper to mfr., and therefore cheaper to buy. They also have a different programming requirement...and my expereince with the '876 parts is that the A versions program significantly faster with fewer errors. FWIW, if you are looking into either of these chips, I would recommend a different chip all together. I think it's the '672, but I'm probably wrong...either way, there's a new one out that's cheaper, and has more features. (More memory, at the least.) I haven't memorized the part number because I haven't been working with projects simple enough for them. The replacement part Cliff is thinking of is the 16F628,
which is pin compatible with the 16F84, but adds more peripherials, can run without a xtal
or RC, adds a USART, supports ICSP, and cost about half the price of the
16F84.
