PLS HELP ME!!! - Paul Michael Bonifacio - Nov 19 1:08:00 2005

TO ALL IT MAY CONCERN:

I am just an average college student asking for help..Pls. help
me on my design project proposal. If you have any suggestions of what
i'm going to propose for my design with the use of MICROCONTROLLER (MCE
BASED) projects..pls dont hsitate to email me at michfate@mich....
I am hoping for your supports.THANK YOU!!!

Here's one idea. An intelligent exhaust fan speed controller and
timer for a toilet.

Background. The prevailing breeze at my home is an Easterly. The
toilet and bathroom are on the Eastern side of the house adjacent to
the living room. Whenever you use the toilet objectionable odours are
carried into the living room due to the legally required, permanently
open, ventilation gap in the window. So, I installed a ceiling fan.
The fan is plugged into a regular power outlet installed in the
ceiling space, switched from below in the toilet enclosure. The
smallest fan I could find has 8" blades in an 11" housing. It kicks
up a hell of a storm. Problems are:- 1. With the toilet door closed,
the breeze rushes in under the door creating a swirling vortex and
(in Winter) blows uncomfortable cold air all over you. 2. You have to
remember to turn it on when you enter. 3. You have to come back later
to turn it off as it should continue to run for a minute or two after
you leave. 4. There's no need for the fan if the current toilet
function is only urination.

Needed, is an infrared motion detector in the ceiling to detect when
a person is present. After a predetermined period it should switch
the fan on using full power to allow the fan to start correctly. The
fan speed should then be cut back appropriately to allow sufficient
forced ventilation without the gale. After the person leaves, the fan
should be shut off. However, the length of time that the fan runs
would be determined by the length of time that the person was
present. In other words the software should try to figure out what
the person was doing, ie., a one or a two :-), and provide an
appropriate amount of ventilation.

All this could be constructed in a hobby box fitted with a mains
outlet socket, a mains plug on a lead, and a lead running to the PIR housing. At 03:08 PM 19/11/2005, Paul Michael Bonifacio wrote:

Phil,

I reckon this idea stinks!

Sorry, couldn't resist :-)

Cheers,

Peter.

The problem with PIR (motion det.) way of detecting

if a person is there is that the person has to keep
moving
in order to trigger the PIR. There was a design in
Nuts and
Volts (I Think) a few years back where a person solved
the "person in room" detection using a hall effect
sensor
(again I think). I just remember the artical because
it solved
a problem.

Keep up posted on how your project is going. >Needed, is an infrared motion detector in the ceiling

I must add this on to the toilet idea, it *should* determine whether it's a
man or a woman in there as well (being a woman, find this important!)
Perhaps a load-cell and ir beams to determine height/weight ratio (now
there's a challenge!) then just a simple seat lift switch (assuming most
guys do that!) cancel the fan routine

All you need is a sniffer to tell when to turn the fan on. (:-)

RE: Re: Programmer and software - Alan Marconett - Dec 6 12:29:00 2005

Hi Peter,

I broke down and bought an ICD2 clone from micro4you. It's probably the
same circuit as the clone ICD2 project mentioned previously.

I can also borrow an ICD2 from work, although that's a pain (I often forget
for the weekends).

Cheers to you as well!

A simple test to see if it's a woman and if so lift
the seat, if man drop it down. OR is it the other way
around?

Someone mentioned hall-sensor.
I guess that's for sensing the magnetic piercings for
determining gender? RFID Prince-Albert?

I've wanted to use this line that rattled into my head
for a month or two. Thanks for providing the opening:

"Hell, with my aim, just be glad that I lift the seat in
the first place....."
