A discussion group for the PICMicro microcontroller. Also called the Microchip PIC, this list is dedicated to the use and abuse of this fine, simple, microcontroller. Close to topic posts are welcome, ie. general electronics.

I'm like you in that I think serial port based debuggers are the way to go!
When you cut your teeth on minicomputers it's hard to do without that little
DEBUGGER> prompt. Does that date me or what? All you really need is deposit,
examine and go.

I did recently invest in one of those little USB based logic analyzers from
USBee. Look on EBay for one. It's a nice little unit that is perfect for
picking off parallel port signals that are too fast for your eyes watching
LEDs. I used it to debug an LCD interface with excellent results. These
analyzers are on the slow side but effective for PIC projects since you won't
be fooling around with anything really fast.

I wish the PIC architecture had more elegant support for serial debuggers. The
bootloader is close but not quite there. Does the 16-bit part do better? I have
my eval board on backorder and hope to receive it any day now. Might be a good
project to hack around with.
