This is a group for folks designing and programming embedded systems using the Rabbit Semiconductor C-programmable microcontroller. Rabbit Semi is a spin-off from Z-World who makes a variety of embedded modules and tools. This group is not affiliated with either Rabbit or Z-World, but is a user forum for sharing ideas, asking questions,
flaunting knowledge, and other typical user group stuff. The Rabbit is a powerful uC, supported by a full-featured C-compiler.
Operator Interface - Adnan Mohammad-Ali - Aug 11 19:11:51 2008
Hey everyone.
I am looking for an touch screen interface (preferably
colour) to work with a bL2600.
(an upgrade from the OP7200)
I was wondering what has everyone used before. I've been trying to
tracing down screens but most of them are strictly Modbus, so I thought
I'd ask everyone here before continuing my search.
Thanks everyone

What is wrong with the Modbus interface? We use colour Modbus screens
with Rabbit RCM's on a number of projects.

If you have a button on the screen that says "run plant" for instance.
How do you communication with modbus to say set the runplant_flag to
TRUE within dynamic C, which could turn on co states rather than the
"run plant" button on the interface turn on an output or monitor an
input and change accordingly to that input?

RE: Operator Interface - Nathan Johnston - Aug 12 0:05:11 2008
Modbus was originally (in the late 1970's) made for raw digital inputs
(1x), digital outputs (0x), input registers (3x) (i.e. analog inputs)
and output registers (4x) (i.e. analog outputs) however you don't need
to be addressing physical inputs or outputs. You would use the 0x
addresses (as they are read/write) for Boolean flags and 4x address
(also read/write) for integers or reals (note than for 32 it numbers
they use 2 consecutive registers).
So for your case you would get the screen to write to a 0x address which
in Dynamic C is your run plant flag.
You also offload the processing required by the interface to the screen.
Controlling a colour LCD in a similar fashion to the black and white
screen on the OP7200 would be very processor intensive.
Regards,
Nathan

My project has been using one from a mob called Amulet @
http://www.amulettechnologies.com/
They are (reportedly) going colour sometime very soon, only load on
the processor is comms to control the data registers (i.e. SET STRING
## TO XXXX and GET WORD ##). For us the best aspect of these screens
is they are very easily reprogrammed in the field from the controller
without proprietary software. So a software upgrade to the controller
easily upgrades the screen and everything matches up (it took WAY too
much effort before we got that code working).
The screen redraw rate is piss poor but that's reportedly fixed in
the colour chip coming soon.

I think the solution is based on how many you need.
Low volume - Go with a standard off the shelf HMI from EZ-automation
or AutomationDirect. They both work with MODBUS; which is pretty
easy to do the rabbit.
Med volume - Look at the EZLCD or Amulet Technologies. I have used
Amulet in the passed with rabbit. Works very nicely. I think the
biggest benefit of Amulet is that it handles all the UI functions,
you just provide the data. You don't have to handle button presses
or screen changes, etc. I have never used EZLCD but it appears that
there is a much larger burden on the host processor to control the UI
then the Amulet.
High Volume - build your own display with the appropriatly sized
processor which will most likely not be a Rabbit; unless that is it's
only function to drive the display and UI.
Hope that helps.
