This is related to my "D'oh post" regarding the Cortex M4 floating point size. According to ARM, the Cortex R4 supports double-precision floating point, and it looks like it's maybe more amenable to embedding than the Cortex Ax cores. I really want to find a chip that I can just lick the back of and stick onto a board, rather than something that'll become the CPU in a built-up comput...

sci.electronics.design Arm Cortex assembley code Does the Arm Cortex support both the "thumb" 16 bit machine codes and also the 32 bit codes? I had been under the impression that Cortex devices only provided the thumb codes but a little time going through "Arm v7-M Architecture Reference Manual" indicates otherwise. Whether or not that reference manual is suitable for Cortex inform...

Hi, I'm working on a project which is currently planned to use an ARM Cortex M3 from ST (device is from the STM32L151xC series). I've never used the Cortex chips before and my ARM experience is quite limited too, is anyone here prepared to give me the executive precis of the state of the compiler/debugger situation for these chips ? If I'd been asked the same question 10 years ago a...

Hi I am looking into using the ARM Cortex M family for a new project. I like the Cortex M series, since in "principle" code should be pretty simelar from one device to another, if you limit the functionality to the core and some limited periphials. Just released is the M0+ with only 9uA/MHz current consumption and that would fit well for a small application. So, if it is possible to d...

Trying to learn about the ARM Cortex M3 solution for low cost embedded market. Their web site isn't much more than a shallow advertisement. http://www.arm.com/products/CPUs/ARM_Cortex-M3.html The "datasheet" is a two sheet sales flyer. No mention of who is licensing and selling this core in chip form. I need some help. Anybody know who has implemented the ARM Cortex M3 core in a ch...

Hi! Does anyone know of a tool that will generate svf files (or something simillar) for ARM cortex based micro's. I've actually got an STM32 but which flavour of cortex shouldn't matter. This is the means by which a production JTAG interconnection tester (JTAG technologies in this instance) programs CPLDs, micro's or other simillar stuff. At the moment we are just using an open source co...

Hi So, considering going the Cortex Mx route for project with new microcontrollers at our firm. Has anyone a feeling/information about the development speed of the ARM Cortex Mx series vs the rest of the industry? Meaning, that potentially the same core strategy for the ARM, licensing to toher manufactors mean that they may have faster development speed that others (Microchip, Renesas, wh...

Hi I've started porting a project from an 8 bit AVR to an ARM Cortex M3 MCU. I'm reasonably comfy with AVR, but I'm new to ARM Cortex. I found an NXP part that looked great, price and feature wise. I purchased an inexpensive LPCXpresso dev kit. However, the drivers and example code is simply awful. Buggy and poorly written, so development is more like reverse engineering than making actual p...

See: http://mcu.st.com/mcu/inchtml.php?fdir=pages&fnam=stm32 (and: http://www.freertos.org/portstm32iar.html :o) The Cortex-M3 marketing has trumpeted greater interoperability between vendors as one of the M3 selling points, so it is interesting to note that the FreeRTOS.org demos for Luminary Micro and STMicroelectronics Cortex-M3 parts use exactly the same port code, while the port...

But, anyone with a real-life experience of the possible code size reduction? Thanks Klaus

The popular GNU-ARM toolset has had long-known issues for the Cortex-M0/M0+/M1 (ARMv6-M architecture). Specifically, people have reported very inefficient code generated, see "Cortex M0/M0+/M1/M23 BAD Optimisation in GCC" https://embdev.net/topic/426508 . But while so far people reported only inefficient code, I would like to make people aware of *incorrect* code generated by GNU-AR
