I have a Linux process that uses, say 16 MBytes of memory according to "top". When I dump the executable using objdump, I can account for only, say, 7 MBytes of that. It's not doing much if any dynamic allocation ( a quick grep fest showed nothing at all, but I wouldn't trust that as truthful for the moment ). What tools do I need to account for the difference? And why couldn't I Goog...

I've been stopped dead by a limitation with the ARM-9 250 MHz SBCs, running Linux, that I've been relying on for my next project. The maximum rate I can run a repeat timer (setitimer, etc) at is 50Hz, ie. 20000 uS repeat time. If I set the repeat rate any faster the thing still repeats every 20mS. Is this a standard 'feature' of Linux SBCs? Does anyone run an SBC that will do significantl...

Hi, I'm writing some embedded SW that runs on a small embedded Linux system and I need to access some WSDL web services. Can anyone suggest a good (small, clean, easy to use) WSDL client framework that will expedite my delivery of this code ? If it was free too then that would be useful, but my client will probably object to the GPL so it will need to be an embeddable licence where I can sh...

I'd like to pick people's brains about aspects of different *suppliers* of Zynq boards. Avnet and Digilent are front-runners, but any info/opinions about other suppliers would be helpful too. - ease of using their embedded linux. My needs are simple, requiring a shell and TCP/IP protocols over ethernet. GUI not required, but might be used if it didn't complicate the deve...

Hi guys, I have a program which has the possibility of doing a shutdown or reboot remotely by doing a popen("reboot") or popen("halt") call after doing some cleanup. I have found that if I execute the application directly from the command line, this works and the shutdown or reboot takes place immediately. However if I try it when the program has been automatically executed on startup throu...

I have a piece of hardware (drum machine) which I know runs a version of Busybox on an Intel Atom platform, I think. It appears to have 256 megs of RAM and a gig of internal Flash storage. I'm trying to figure out what the best way to hopefully ssh into the device and gain root would be, as it seems there's a corrupted file in the Flash storage that's causing it to crash repeatedly whe...

I'm new to embedded Linux so this question could be very simple for many of you. Most probably, it isn't directly related to embedded world, but to Linux OS generally. Anyway I think it is a common scenario in embedded applications. I'm going to develop a local/remote control of an electronic device. It communicates through a RS485 link. The local control will be a touch-screen display...

I have a Linux-based SOM that intregrates complexity (CPU, memories, Ethernet PHY and so on) and I'm going to design a carrier board for it. I'd like to add an external watchdog on the carrier board for two purposes: - automatically rerun the system when the applications running on Linux crash for some reasons (mainly bugs) - automatically rerun the system when the system is not able to...

I think this is little OT here, because the question is mostly network oriented. However my nodes will be Linux embedded boxes and some solutions could be very low-level, so I think many of you could help me in some way. I have N Ethernet hosts based on embedded Linux. Each one features an Ethernet interface dedicated to the final user that could change the IP address configuration.

Maybe this question should be posted in a linux development group, however the use of a serial port is more typical in an embedded environment, so I try to post here. I have an embedded Linux box (based on a Raspberry) with a serial port converted to a USB port through a UART-USB transceiver from Microchip. This USB port is seen as a COM port under Windows OS. I need to do simple ope...

Following on from my recent question about PThreads I have a new question about Boost:context https://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_67_0/libs/context/doc/html/index.html We have some legacy code(Motorola 68000 C) that we want to use that has cooperative task switching. We want to run it all as a single thread and keep its co-operative organization within that thread. Is "Boost context" a

I asked a related question repeatedly but I have a slightly simpler question. We have a bunch of controllers running embedded Linux and connected via ethernet. We need to provide conference call audio between up to six parties where all callers can hear each other. We need a solution that doesn't depend on a niche product that might not be around for long. Are there any sugges

Nowadays the poor embedded developer faces new challenges that go outside the limited world of C/C++ program on a resource constrained hardware. Now the hardware isn't so resource constrained (Raspberry and many other embedded Linux boards or SOM are just examples) on one side. And the device isn't isolated anymore, it is usually connected (directly or indirectly to Internet). The Th...

I used a simple driver for serial port in Linux with success in many projects, but recently I found an issue with it. When QT application starts some complex graphics (I see its CPU load reaching 70-80%), the ...
