I would like to learn more about electronics (FPGAs, programming them, interfacing with analogue circuitry etc.), so I have decided to get an FPGA. At first, I want to play with it to see how it works, and then I want to implement some "personal interest projects". These will require two-way communication with my PC, and if possible, my Ethernet network. I want to do things like drive ...

Figured this was the place to ask (comp.arch.embedded or comp.arch.fpga) Whats the cheapest board to study VHDL on? Ideally Id like an FPGA based board with a few inputs (dip switches, toggles?), some outputs (parallel or serial connector, some leds) < $100 I am looking on ebay now, and I see one or two boards well above $100. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm using a Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGA on a self-designed PCB and I'd like to ask for a way to program the embedded PowerPC independently from booting the whole FPGA via the Xilinx Platform Flash. Is there a way to account for that, maybe be designing an additional Flash device in the BS chain? Is it even possible to run the PowerPC even though the FPGA is not programmed? Regards ...

Anyone know how the USB Blaster cable loads data to the C3 fpga on the board? The schematic shows a CPLD between the FPGA and the USB port. There is a USB to parallel chip between the cpld and the usb port. But I do not see any serial or parallel data going to the fpga. I wish Altera added more details to the starter kit documentation. There is all this source code but it is encrypted. So...

Hi, I'm debugging a device with very strange setup - the FPGA is connected via FT3323H chip (interface A is used as asycnhronous FIFO to communicate with FPGA, interface B is used as JTAG to program/debug FPGA with ChipScope). Now I started to debug the embedded software, using the QEMU to emulate the embedded PC. However in this setup I should forward one interface of the FT2232 (A - FI...

Hi, I have the Xilinx spartan-3 development kit and I am tying to connect it to PC troughs Ethernet connection. On the board there is a physical layer transceiver (DP83847). My data is stored in a FIFO memory inside of the FPGA. I would like to transmit it to the PC. Can someone suggest me how can I do that? I understood that I have to implement IP core on the FPGA and what else...? Thanks ...

Hello, I am using DLP FPGA kit which contains FT2232D chip. Data transfer is through parallel FIFO interface and D2xx driver. I have to transfer 3 bytes of data which is generated at different data rate in different scenarios. This 3 bytes of data is generated at X/Y rate in FPGA . Here X can have value of 5MHz, 7.5Mhz, 10 Mhz, 15MHz or 20 Mhz and Y will have value 256, 128 or 64. But while rea...

Hi all, I am a student, especially interested in learning about programmable logic, but the prices asked are a bit much! Does anyone have a few surplus they would sell cheap? Hey all-- So my experience with the native bitstream compression algorithms provided by the FPGA vendors has been that they don't actually achieve all that much compression. This makes sense given that the expansion has to be accomplished in the FPGA hardware, and so can't be all that aggressive. I generally find myself programming FPGAs from microcontrollers, and so I've got cloc...

Hello everyone, I would like to know if we can use a general purpose (available off-the-shelf at popular stores) USB to JTAG cable to program a Xilinx Spartan 3 FPGA or does it *have to be* a cable (and box) specifically meant for programming a Spartan 3 FPGA (as shown on the Xilinx website)? I am hoping to hear from people who have actually used a general purpose USB to JTAG cable (...
