Are there any situations where programming an embedded processor "requires" at least some assembly code? How about for AVR, MSP430, 68HC11, 8051(Atmel)? Can these 4 microcontrollers be programmed fully in C without touching assembly (even interrupts and etc.)?

I have a situation where after performing a halt and re-going on the ICE I am using, one of the interrupts effectively becomes disabled, ie.. its like it has become masked, however I have checked the interrupt mask afterwards and its still intact.. And its only one interrupt which is being affected. Maybe a hardware issue.. Its an older system so who knows. Any help appreciated. Thanks in ...

Hello, I'm developing some code for a PowerPC (mpc55x) with the gnu gcc. I'm using the decrementer to generate a periodic interrupt that should execute a C-routing. How can I write the address of this function into the Interrupt-vector-Table (IVOR10)? Gilles

OK. I've got decades of experience in the embedded space and I should be able to do this without whining for help here -- but I'm at the "bash your head against the wall until some bricks give way" stage of this problem and I'm starting to go in circles. I'm hoping that someone happens to know an answer, or will give me some suggestion that helps me find my way. I've got a project t...

Hello all. I'm a newbie in the realm of micro programming. I'm using MPLAB C18 with the PIC18F452 and PICDEMO 2 Plus board. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to do an interrupt routine! I've used the buzzer interrupt sample that came with the ICD2 software, but have been unable to modify it to suit my needs. What I want to do is wait for a button to be pressed to start my rout...

Hi there Looking at several processors at the moment but ARM7 and Coldfire in particular. I like the popularity of ARM and associated tools, but cant get over the fact that the interrupt structure within them (only two priority levels) is pants. Coldfire has 7 or 8 nestable levels. I would appreciate anyones view on this. Cheers Andrew

Hi Folks I am looking at developing a new application, that I hope I can do using an 8051 derivative. Two main requirements that I have are that it be pretty damn fast (50-100MHz) and have I2C. Also around 6-ish external interrupts and port for RS232... Have been looking also at using a RTOS....but this is not fixed in stone. I am quite familiar with the 8051 and the keil uvision IDE ...

No advice required, just need to tell people who might understand, if not sympathise, about my last 2 hours..... Got stuck with an HCS12 program that's grown into a bit of a monster. I need to know the frequency of a signal that varies from about 1 Hz to 20 Hz. I was thinking of setting up an external interrupt that interrupts when the RPM magnet goes by and to read one of the 3 timers in the processor to compute the period of the signal. Does that sound like the correct way to do this? It seems that I could do something with interrupting the timer directly instead,...

This is related to my question about interrupts in an STM32F303 processor. It turns out that the problem is in the compiler (or I'm going insane, which is never outside the realm of possibility when I'm working on embedded software). I'm coding in C++, and I'm using a clever dodge for protecting chunks of code from getting interrupted. Basically, I have a class that protects a block...

I recall a discussion about the design of an instruction set architecture where someone was saying an instruction was required to test and set a bit or word as an atomic operation if it was desired to support multiple processors. Is this really true? Is this a function that can't be emulated with other operations including the disabling of interrupts? -- Rick C
