Anyone know the quickest or easiest way of recording a serial data stream and timestamping each byte with a resolution of at least 1ms (preferably finer)? I can only find cheap or free programs with less resolution, or very expensive solutions, often involving special hardware. I only need to monitor one port, and I don't need to send any characters (actually I'm snooping on an RS485 bus). ...

I want to make a board that has: 1. ethernet socket 2. two rs232 ports 3. one rs485 ports And put an enclosure around it. Do you guys know of any enclosure companies that sell plastic enclosures that look like your small typical Netgear or Linksys hubs, which i can just get the holes cut out? I need that "cool" look, rather than just going to Digikey and getting a simple plastic rectangu...

I'm building a small device that will talk to the world through a modem. I've ordered the XE2422H devkit from XEComm. It basically has a RJ-11 connector for the phone line and an RS232 connector for the controller. I need a cheap microcontroller that's easy to deal with which I can interface with the XE2422H. It will be doing data collection via the modem, so I'd like it to have at least 256KB ...

Hello all, I'm using the at89C51RD2 in an current application where I;m trying to use the Flip and the RS232 ISP programming. I programmed a virgin chip perfectly the first time and was amazed at how easy it was. Now that I'm trying to program it again though I'm having problems. The flip software is giving me an error message about a software timeout. I've done nothing with ALE I've...

I have some hardware that has a PIC18F6680 pic cpu. This is older hardware that is non programmable that we are starting to replace with a reprogrammable version. The newer version is the basically the same, but has a maxium max3233e rs232 chip, and a mini headphone jack that we connect to a laptop to program with vendor software via a laptop w/serial port. What would be the easiest way to re...

Hi everyone I'm upgrading an existing embedded system. This system has 1 serial port and DOS is runnig on it. But customers wanted this device to talk with other 8 devices over RS232(new requirement) First idea i came up with is ; finding a new card with 8 serial ports on it and integrate it to the former system. So that it would be the interface between existing system and other devices. ...

Gang: Now that all the cuel new laptops have no serial ports and no PCMCIA card slot, and I am stuck haplessly with USB, does anyone have a good experience with any USB (or fire-wire) serial devices? I have many legacy apps that want to talk to a UART real bad and the quality of the driver would be the issue here. I would really appreciate a couple of names of devices I could purchase...

Either 3V or 5V powered, ASCI output via rs232 or i2c or spi - (NMEA 0183) and under 10cm by 10cm (5cm by 5cm or under would be better). Start up time isn't a concern , up to a couple of minutes is fine Quite a few out th...

I have built a number of battery operated circuits using PIC16F88s. They are housed in a plastic case with a socket to plug in a serial connection for controlling LED outputs by RS232 comms. Sometimes when you touch the socket with your finger, the PIC responds in a manner suggesting that it has received some random data on the Rx pin of the USART. The problem occurs much more frequently ...

Hi c.a.e, I was asked to implement a bidirectional communication via USB (on an AVR32, which is OTG capable) between two identical devices. After some time of searching I couldn't even come up with a definitive answer if this is possible at all. Effectively this connection should work like a RS232, i.e. when you connect the two devices with a cable they should start talking to each other wi...

I've got an application that needs an SBC (a redundant pair, actualy) which will survive 24 hours on battery power. I either spec a bank of big batteries, or find something less hungry than the 12-watt Ampro board I was originally looking at. I need Ethernet, 4 RS232 ports, USB, and 512MB of DRAM. I did some searching for Alchemy or XScale SBCs, but everything strikes out on the memory ...

I am trying to make it work under win8... It isn't a Prolific 2303 and it isn't an FTDI FT232 or similar... Win8 does notice it was plugged in (it beeps) but nothing new (that I can see) appears under Control Panel / Devices. I would expect a COM port with a Hayes compatible modem behind it. That is what their older models do. The old 7100 is a straight RS232 Hayes modem, but the XT is...

Hi all, In serial communication, eg. RS232 or RS422, we can configure the port (for example) to send 8 data bits, Even parity bit and 1 stop bit. However, when the receiver receives, it only reads in the code and output to the screen. How can I capture the parity bit that is sent? Thank you for your advice. FT
